Happy MLK weekend everyone! Check the schedule before you come into class.
From the Reunion newsletter:
In his Letter from a Birmingham Jail, Martin Luther King Jr. shares: “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly affects all indirectly.”
As practitioners of yoga, we are called to tell the truth about fascism and white supremacy in this country. We are called to acknowledge that while murdering an unarmed mother is illegal and morally repugnant, it is nothing new for our Black, brown, and q***r neighbors. We are called to accept that ICE isn’t just a modern replica of Gestapo in N**i Germany, ICE is THE legacy of slavery and Jim Crow laws in the United States- legislation that the N**is based their own Nuremberg laws on.
To practice yoga is to sit with the uncomfortable truth that fascism is not new to our country- even if it is new to you.
But there’s good news too- to practice yoga is to remember that we have American heroes like the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr who showed us a non-violent path of resistance. We have statistical proof that non-violent resistance works, if we act NOW and act TOGETHER.
To practice yoga is to remember that action is the antidote to despair.
Now is the time not just to donate and protest, but to organize. Join an upcoming meeting with check out and . There are already groups doing incredible work- you do not have to build something from scratch, you just need to join.
This weekend, let us reflect on the life of Martin Luther King Jr, and all those who work to bend the moral arc of the universe toward justice.
Fascism thrives on hopelessness and exhaustion. Do not let them win.
Reunion is here as a space for you to turn off your phone, step away from the news cycle, and pour into yourself so that you can continue to show up for the people and causes you care about.
Self care is not selfish. Community care without self care is not sustainable. As Dr. King reminds us, we are tied in a single garment of destiny. Let’s get to sewing.
