“How do blind people read?”

Audiobooks are part of the answer, but so is braille, DAISY structured audio, large print, tactile books, screen readers, and voice-first technology. 📖

For many families researching this for the first time, the biggest surprise is how much free support already exists — through NLS, public libraries, and services specifically designed for people with visual impairment.

We broke it all down. Seven real formats, US services, honest guidance. Read the full article here: https://realsam.us/how-do-blind-people-read

Today is World Health Day 2026.

For the estimated 12 million Americans aged 40 and over who have vision impairment, health isn't just a medical question—it's a daily one. It's whether technology works for you or against you; whether you can read your own medication labels; whether you feel confident making a phone call without help.

Independence is part of health. It's something worth paying attention to today and every day.

If you're researching support for yourself or someone you love, the American Foundation for the Blind (afb.org) is a great starting point. And if you'd like to know whether RealSAM Pocket might help, we're always glad to have that conversation too. No pressure, just an honest chat.

Easter weekend means different things to different people—a religious celebration, a family gathering, a quieter few days, or something in between.

What a lot of people have in common is this: it's a time when the usual pace lifts. When there's more space to sit with someone you love, have a conversation that isn't rushed, be a bit more present than the regular week allows.

For families navigating vision loss together, those moments of connection matter especially. The holiday table looks different when someone you care about is struggling with their sight.

The small things stand out; whether they can follow the conversation, whether they feel included, whether the day feels ordinary in the best sense of the word.

Wishing everyone in our community—whatever your Easter looks like—a warm and easy weekend. 🐣

Being able to read something yourself shouldn’t be a luxury.

With the right technology, everyday information becomes easier to access independently.

Using the RealSAM Sight Assistant tool, users can simply take a photo and ask questions about what’s in front of them — from printed text to everyday objects.

Independence often comes down to the small things.

🍽️ Understanding what’s on a menu.

Technology can help make these everyday moments more accessible.

This Women’s History Month, we’re celebrating five extraordinary blind women whose achievements shaped history.

From abolitionist Harriet Tubman to Paralympian Marla Runyan and disability rights lawyer Haben Girma, these leaders challenged expectations and expanded opportunities for blind and visually impaired people.

Their stories remind us how much blind women have contributed—and continue to contribute—to history, culture, and civil rights.

Spring means gardens waking up again.

But gardening isn’t just visual—it’s tactile, fragrant, and full of sensory detail.

Many blind and low vision gardeners experience spring through:

🌱 the texture of soil
🌿 the scent of herbs
🐝 the sound of bees returning

We’ve shared some accessible gardening tips for blind and visually impaired people on the blog, which you can access here:

This World Book Day, we want to shine a spotlight on stories that centre blindness, and other forms of disability—not as side notes, but as natural ways of seeing (and sensing) the world.

To do so, we’ve made a list of 5 books that flip the script on disability, pushing readers to expand their usual conceptions of the world around them.

They are…

• All the Light We Cannot See, by Anthony Doerr (our February BookClub pick!)

• The Country of the Blind, by H. G. Wells

• Blindness, by José Saramago

• Seeing Voices, by Oliver Sacks

• Life Unseen: A Story of Blindness, by Selina Mills

Read our outline of the books in our full blog post via the link in our bio.

Which books would you add? Comment below!

We’ve all been there: you want to help, but you don’t want to make it awkward.

A simple rule of thumb: ask first, and let the person lead. If they’d like guiding, offer your arm so they can hold you (rather than being grabbed or steered). Small details help too: say if you’re stepping down, and don’t walk away without telling them.

We’ve put together a short guide on what to say, what not to do, and how to guide respectfully, which you can read on our website via the link below. 💛
