Every September, the nation’s treatment providers for alcohol and drug use disorders and mental illnesses honor millions whose lives have been transformed through recovery. Let’s all celebrate recovery – recovery from a past or past experience that oftentimes hinders hope. We’ve all been there.

Dr. Leana Wen, Health Commissioner of Baltimore City, argues that there is a stigma surrounding opioid addiction, unlike other types of diseases and sickness. Wen says that only one in ten people get the help they need when it comes to opioid addiction.

Are you kidding me? Group sucks!

“Three, four, maybe more gabbing about their experiences – I don’t know them! I don’t want all of my stuff out there! I have my own issues and now I must hear theirs too? Oh no! Not me! You won’t see me there!”

Dozens of times, I have heard these very common feelings about group therapy. But I urge you to not miss the operative word in the phrase “group therapy” – therapy. Incredible counsellors and therapists around the world have implemented group into their evidence-based practices for one reason and one reason only – it works! It is a part of your recovery.
