P.A.I.R.I.N.G. — because connection comes before correction.
We talk about 'pairing' all the time in ABA, but it's more than just rapport-building.
It's how we show up-with intention, empathy, and consistency.
And honestly, it's something we can all be reminded of, no matter how long we've been in the field. Here's what pairing really looks like in practice:
P - Presence. Be fully there.
Not just physically, but mentally and emotionally. No multitasking, no mental to-do lists—just you and them.
A - Acceptance. Meet your client exactly where they are, not where you wish they were. No judgment. No pressure.
I - Interest. Get curious. What lights them up? What makes them laugh? Show up like someone who wants to know them.
R - Respect. Respect their feelings, their space, their preferences-even on hard days.
I - Invitation. Connection is earned, not forced. Invite them to engage rather than push for compliance. Autonomy matters.
N - Nurturing. Create safety—emotionally and physically. Trust doesn't grow in cold environments.
G - Grace. For them, and for yourself. Because progress is never linear and neither is connection.
Pairing isn't just a phase—it's a mindset. And the good news? You can practice it every single day.
