Cliff tried orthopedic and home exercises to help correct problems with his ankles, but nothing worked long-term. That’s when his doctor referred him to our center in Green.

“It only took a couple visits for me to realize that these folks were seriously knowledgeable professionals and considerate of patients' needs and limitations,” Cliff said.

He worked with Physical Therapist Chelsea Lynn on an at-home exercise plan and finally found the success he was looking for. “After several weeks my ankles are in great shape,” Cliff shared.

That was not the only improvement he saw. Cliff had a balance problem after suffering a stroke several years ago and was surprised to find physical therapy helped with that, too.

“I'm one very pleased patient," Cliff said.

We're so happy to be apart of your recovery, Cliff!

When most people hear about athletic trainers, they think of high school, collegiate and professional sports.

You never know when your life will change. For Tami Molloy, it was an ordinary day, out doing one of her favorite things; riding her motorcycle. That’s when Tami was hit by a car, suffering many broken bones and surgeries to repair them. She was scared she would never walk normally again. For more than seven months, she couldn’t walk at all.

Tami started working with Physical Therapist Adam Russell at our Derby, KS center, and her progress was fast. “After six weeks of treatment I was able to bear weight on my leg again and took my first steps since the accident,” Tami explained.

“Adam is my biggest supporter,” Tami said. “My case has been quite challenging, but Adam and staff have been able to find ways to accommodate and get results. The first time I walked in the clinic, I think the staff was more excited than I was! There were so many little milestones along the way and the staff support helped me believe in myself.”

Tami is now making great strides in her recovery. “I am walking most of the time without crutches and I am now able to do some things around the house," Tami said. "It has been 10 months since our accident and life is finally starting to get back to somewhat normal.”

Thank you for choosing NovaCare Rehabilitation, Tami. We are proud of your recovery and thankful to be by your side through your accomplishments.

Happy International Women's Day!

Quick facts:

- Mary McMillan is considered the “mother of physical therapy” in the United States and was the founder and first president of the American Women’s Physical Therapeutic Association in 1921, helping treat wounded soldiers after World War I.

- Among the five founders of Occupational Therapy, three are women: Isabel Newton, Susan Cox, and Eleanor Clarke Slagle.

- Margaret Blanton was one of the first Americans to publish work on speech therapy and was one of the founding members of the American Academy of Speech Correction, which later became the American Speech-Hearing Language Association.

- Gail Weldon was one of the first ten women to be certified as an athletic trainer and the first female Athletic Trainer for the U.S. Olympic Committee in 1976.

This International Women’s Day, we recognize the amazing contributions of these women and the inspiration they’ve provided for all women here.

Barbara Morrissey is a registered nurse on a mission to fight cancer. She has spent the last 29 years running the New York City (NYC) Marathon to support cancer research at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC).

Barbara’s connection to cancer is a personal one, after all. At the age of 26, her brother was diagnosed with testicular cancer. Due to a new chemotherapy protocol available to treat the deadly disease and, after rounds of treatment, Barbara’s brother survived.

Even still, after all these years, Barbara’s desire to fight cancer and help others keeps her training and logging many miles. So when she underwent surgery for a knee replacement, her ultimate goal was to get back to running as soon as possible so she could run the 2022 NYC Marathon.

Barbara turned to physical therapy to help her heal. Her perseverance training on the road was matched in our rehabilitation setting. She put the work in and broke the odds and ran that marathon.

“I had a great day running my 29th NYC Marathon, and my ‘new’ knee felt great,” said Barbara. “The weather was hot/humid, like Florida! But, I took it easy as runners in Florida have learned to do. I was so happy to get to the start line and enjoy 26.2 miles, 5 bridges, almost 50,000 runners and thousands of cheering supporters.”

Barbara placed third in her age group for the marathon – quite the feat! – and our team was happy to play a part in her success.

“I finished, sweaty and tired, but unbelievably happy and thankful to all who joined me in this effort to run down cancer, giving researchers at MSKCC $10,862.40 to beat cancer.”

Great job, Barbara! We wish you continued success with marathon running and charity work.

Jim has always been an avid square dancer. He was also a chef by trade and passion, spending his retirement dancing and cooking homemade meals for family. That is until an ankle wound left him hospitalized and resulted in a below-the-knee amputation.

He spent the first part of his recovery journey at the Cleveland Clinic Rehabilitation Hospital in affiliation with Select Medical, in Avon, Ohio. The therapy team helped him to regain the strength he needed to use a wheelchair post-amputation for his mobility needs at home and in the community. Still adamant about not accepting the wheelchair as a long-term tool for his mobility, the team at Cleveland Clinic suggested he continue therapy in the outpatient setting.

On his first day of therapy in our outpatient center, Jim needed assistance getting from his car to the building. He was eager to get started on his journey to ditch the wheelchair for good. His goal was to get back to square dancing with a prosthetic.

As he progressed through outpatient therapy, Jim recalls two days as his favorite; the day he was able to hop for the first time with his walker outside of the parallel bars, and the day he could stand without any support. But those days don't compare to his all-time favorite day - when he began to walk again on his own!

Jim is back to cooking and walking, without the wheelchair, and ready for square dancing again this spring.

David sustained a right thumb fracture in September when he fell and caught his right thumb on a chair. As a professional piano player (playing since age 15!), it was important to David to get back to the keys.

An accomplished musician, David has played for Aretha Franklin and Shirley Jones from television's 'The Partridge Family'. He also had his own band for 25 years and played at local venues such as the Bay Pony Inn and William Penn Inn. David was also an instrumental music teacher for 34 years in Pennsylvania's Quakertown School District.

After making a full recovery in therapy, David was kind enough to come play some tunes for us.

68-year-old Ruby had back surgery this past June that required two surgeries on different days. Fast forward to July and she needed an emergency back surgery and was bedbound for four months. Not being able to move for a long stretch, Ruby was ready to give up.

September rolled around and it was time for Ruby to begin aquatic therapy. During the early stages of therapy, she needed a walker due to pain and her legs needed support. With the support of physical therapist Lisa Sowell from our Cherry Hill West center in NJ, Ruby began to see improvement in the pool.

After aquatic therapy, she started regular physical therapy in November. We're happy to report that Ruby is now walking without her walker and is getting back to normal activities she loves.

"This has been quite an experience," said Ruby. "I thanked God so many times for helping me through this difficult process. I would like to personally thank the four physical therapists that assisted me throughout this part of my healing process. Your patience and determination to get me up and moving has really put me on a new path in my healing process."
