This month, we’re proud to recognize our incredible team members who identify as Black. With fewer than 5% of PTs, OTs, and SLPs nationwide identifying as Black and even fewer holding advanced board certification, this group represents excellence at the highest level.

Every clinician pictured holds an advanced certification in specialties like Orthopedics, Neuro Rehab, Women’s Health, Lymphedema/WoundCare or Hand Therapy. Their dedication, expertise and leadership strengthen our programs and inspire our entire department.

At our Inaugural Cardiac Event Survivors’ Day, we were honored to celebrate three incredible survivors, Delya Sommerville, Stephen Hayes and Maurice Montaldi, as they shared their powerful stories of beating life-threatening cardiac events. From a chance rescue on the streets near the Capitol to advanced lifesaving treatment at GW Hospital, each survivor’s journey is a reminder of the strength of the human spirit and the impact of exceptional multidisciplinary care.

Thank you to our clinicians, partners and the GW Hospital Women’s Board for making this event possible and to our survivors for inspiring hope and awareness this American Heart Month.

Today, we’re sharing a new segment, entitled Take 5. Our featured team member is Lenny Newman, Sterilizing Tech I, who has been part of the GW Hospital family for an incredible 56 years! 🙌

Lenny turns 80 years young in July and still walks to work every day from his home in Dupont Circle. Here’s a little more about this beloved colleague:

❤️ Favorite part of the job?
“I started in 1969 as a nursing assistant in the Recovery Room. I’ve stayed because the people here are friendly. I like it all and nothing fazes me.”

💛 What makes his heart happy?
“Coming in and seeing my coworkers, especially seeing younger people enjoying their jobs.”

🎶 Favorite music?
“All genres! Especially Christian, jazz and classical.”

🍽️ Favorite restaurant?
“Annie’s Paramount Steak House, a welcoming, historic spot that’s been open to the gay community since 1948.”

📚 What he loves outside of work?
He’s an amateur interior decorator who loves antiques and books, especially hardcover architectural and design books. He recently downsized from 500 to “only” 300–400 books and loves taking his grocery cart to local bookstores to restock!

Last week, our Patient Experience team played Cupid and delivered heartfelt Valentines to our staff. These adorable cards were handmade by schoolchildren through Valentines By Kids an organization founded in 2021 by Patrick Roy Kaufmann when he was in the 7th grade, and the program continues to spread joy each year.

“Made by hand, felt by hearts,” Patrick shared. We’re so grateful for these young artists and the joy they shared with our team.
