July has been a time to acknowledge and explore issues concerning mental health and minority communities, and to destigmatize mental illness and enhance public awareness among affected minority groups across the U.S.

Stress and Trauma can directly impact a child’s mental and emotional well-being. Recognizing the differences can be important in their overlap to provide effective trauma-informed care.

Need to find support?  Start with your child’s pediatrician. Schedule a consultation to discuss your concerns. Contact our office at (202) 525-2426.

It is easy for intense emotions to quickly become overwhelming. Even kids without a history of mental health conditions like depression can make impulsive decisions with tragic consequences. Below are some actions you can take to ensure that your home is a safe environment for your child.

🟢 Firearms: An unsecured firearm is a deadly risk for a child of any age.

Here are some facts:
* Even if you think you’ve hidden your gun well, chances are your child will find it. In fact, by as young as first grade, 4 out of 5 kids know where a gun is hidden in their home.

* 90% of su***de attempts with a firearm are fatal.

* Nearly 2/3 of firearm deaths are due to su***de.

🟢 Medications: Any medication can be dangerous.

* Medications are frequently used in su***de attempts.

* Over-the-counter and prescription medications can result in overdose death.

🟢 Other Risk:

* Alcohol is a commonly used drug among young people. Alcohol use can increase the risk of impulsive decisions like su***de.

* If your child is thinking about su***de, check your home for other risks. Find and securely store sharp objects such as knives or razors and items such as belts or ropes. You may need to disable locks on bathroom and bedroom doors.

Events That Can Impact Your Child’s Well-being

All children face life changes, but the impacts may vary in each child. The support and buffering systems provided by parents, caregivers and the community can make a big difference.

Here are some examples of stressful experiences or events, sometimes called adverse childhood experiences or ACEs, that may impact a child:

* Death of a loved one
* Separation or divorce
* Witnessing violence at home or school
* Financial instability, food insecurity or housing instability
* Persistent school stressors
* Su***de of a friend
* Relatives in prison
* Gender or racial discrimination or bullying (in person or via social media)
