Today, I’m making this gluten free banana chiffon cake and freezing it for Easter. Banana is my favorite chiffon cake flavor and texture. I have quite a few frozen egg whites. So, I’m going to experiment by using butter (2 teaspoons) and liquid lecithin (1 teaspoon) as an egg yolk substitute, per egg. I’ll add a little turmeric to replace the yellow color. 🤞🤞🤞

Breastfeeding is not easy and it does not come naturally.

Breastfeeding is a learned art and a skill many new moms and babies don’t naturally have.

The idea that breastfeeding is a natural way of feeding a newborn gets in the way of recognising that many new moms need support and guidance to enjoy their breastfeeding journey- without judgement.🙏

It’s takes patience, perseverance and knowledge to be successful with breastfeeding. Knowing how to latch, position and the mechanics of how breastfeeding work.
It’s also important to recognise that a baby is sucking or rooting, that these are reflexes which are involuntary. This is why it can become very confusing for the breastfeeding mom.
Lactation is affected greatly by emotions.
If your anxious, stressed and sleep deprived your lactation might not be as productive.
The message, too feed more to make more isn’t necessarily true either. This can be very exhausting for both mom and baby and will have the opposite effect.
Pain is not normal. A mom may have discomfort at the beginning but ongoing pain should be monitored and checked.
Breastfeeding should not be pushed. Pushing a mom to breast because it’s natural and healthy is not ok.
It’s also not ok that the message surrounding formula feeding is detrimental to a baby’s health and well-being.
It’s time for education and guidance to increase the statistics.
Moms to hade access to breastfeeding classes and breastfeeding experts who are genuinely interested in a moms needs and not use policies and guidelines to push their agenda.

Breastmilk is no doubt the most amazing nutrient for all babies.
But that doesn’t mean everyone can or wants too.

YOU CAN NOT DO THIS ALONE

If your doctor has suggested medication for your baby’s reflux here is what you need to know.
🦠 Proton Pump Inhibitors- Omeprazole and Gaviscon among many are used to help against baby reflux but what they don’t tell you is the side effects from using these drugs. PPI’s work to reduce the production of stomach acids, it does not cure or help with the underlying problem that is causing the reflux in the first place. It’s important to know how the body functions and that stomach acids are there fir a reason. Gastric acid play an important role in your baby’s immunity. It stops bad bacteria from going into the intestines that can cause challenges. Which means your baby is more susceptible to infections while on PPI’s
They also disrupts proteins, fats and vitamins from being absorbed efficiently.
It’s important to talk to you medical provider or someone who will be able to help you. If your baby is on PPIs it’s important to keep going until you get professional advice. Baby’s need to be weaned of slowly.
🦠If your baby is in reflux medication then it’s a good idea to introduce probiotics. Good gut bacteria to help the decreased levels due to PPI’s
Probiotics for breastfeeding mums is also a good idea.
🌿Herbal remedies can also help such as chamomile, Rhugar and other natural options to help your baby through this difficult time.
Talking to a herbalist or naturopath can be great options for you.
Diet elimination is your last resort as this often isn’t what is causing the reflux however their are babies that do get better by eliminating or I would say reducing dairy or other foods.

Please talk to you health care provider to discuss options and never take the answer “Its Normal” when it comes to reflux and your baby. It’s not normal! As I have mentioned before, looking at feeding routines, tongue tie, latching challenges and sleep, all have an impact on your baby’s reflux.

Babies can’t fall asleep on their own!!!!

This is a biggest myth of all when it comes to newborns or babies.
When someone tells you that babies cannot fall asleep on their own and it’s not biologically normal for them to do so must not realise or know how babies fall asleep inside the womb.
Yes babies can fall asleep on their but they need to have a positive safe and secure environment to do so plus the opportunity.
Many Babies don’t get the down time that promotes a secure and safe sleep environment. A baby who is fed, comfy, been burped and has had a nappy change. Can happily lie awake, play and fall asleep when they are relaxed and ready. Picture shows my little one doing this quite frequently as a newborn.
Sleep is a learned skill.
The environment inside the womb isn’t quite the same as on the other side. Doesn’t mean that babies can’t feel safe and confident to fall asleep independently.
It’s about consistency.
Giving a baby a good positive routine that fits in with you can make a world of difference. Humans thrive on routine. Babies are human’s!!!
So why do we treat them so differently🤷‍♀️.
Doesn’t mean you can’t feed your baby to sleep or cuddle then to sleep. It’s about how often you do this that will create a pattern that either gives your baby skills to fall asleep independently or they rely on you every time it’s sleep time.
Remember these words
“SLEEP SUSTAINABILITY”
Is what I’m doing to help my baby sleep, going to work long term?
This is different for everyone.

Looking at dropping night feeds!

There are a few reasons why you should follow through.
Babies over a certain age don’t need to feed during the night for nutrition if their weight and growth is fine.

This is especially true for babies OVER the age of 12 weeks.
A good feeding routine during the day up till 10 pm at night, should give your baby enough nutrition to last at least another 4-5 hours if not longer during the night.
Also a good nap routine, the ability to fall asleep independently as much as possible, all helps your baby sleep better and stay asleep during the night.

Here is what happens when you feed a baby during the night.

1- Feeding and the biological clock.
Babies who feed frequently during the night will often wake on a schedule. That’s because the body has its own internal feeding clock. Food is received at a certain time consistently every night for a few days, it will become routine. The body is very clever in this way.

2- Digestive System
Because you baby is receiving food ,the digestive system is still at work burning the calories. It may be a little slower than during the day but it still working. This may lead increase sugar levels, discomfort due to gas, reflux, constipation or bowel motions at night and ultimately lack of sleep.

3- The Renal System
Not only is the digestive system at work but the renal system is also busy filtering out fluid and filing up the bladder. This means a baby who feeds more frequently during the night has more wet nappies. As they get older they may wake when the bladder is being emptied. Changing nappies during the night can hinder a baby’s ability to go back to sleep.

Sleep at night is for restorative sleep. The body is at rest, heart rate slows down, core body temperature drops, metabolism slows down and baby is sleeping better.

Plus mums are also getting better sleep to tackle the day ahead.

I Came up with this easy, delicious, gluten-free chicken nugget! 🤤

I cubed chicken breast, coated in a blend of Bob’s Red Mill GF flour, brown sugar, chili powder, salt, pepper, and garlic powder, dredged in egg, then coated in Aleia’s GF breadcrumbs with the same spice mix as the flour. Baked for 20 minutes at 400 degrees!

Seriously so much better than any store-bought GF nugget, and I was able to make a huge batch. Great mix of savory, sweet, and spicy 🥰

Made with gluten free digestive biscuit crumb and melted butter also gf hobnob biscuit which didn't work as well as digestive biscuit. I lined plastic cups with the biscuit crumb and butter mixture. Then I whipped double cream, mixed in cream cheese, vanilla essence and icing sugar and poured into the crumbed lined cups. I put these in the freezer for 4 hours. Then decorated with digestive crumb for sand, paper windmills and shells.

My boyfriend (not GF) sends me recipes that he finds and thinks look good. Last night I made this one. It's called hamburger casserole. I made it completely GF and it tastes so good. He really liked it, too, which is saying a lot because he is very picky!
Recipe:
Brown one pound of ground beef (I used two) with a small onion.
Drain beef and return to skillet. Add 1 top chili powder, salt and pepper to taste. (I added paprika)
Stir in one can of tomato soup and one can cream of mushroom soup (I used GF soup of course. I used cream of chicken because we don't care for mushrooms. I also added one tomato and two cream of chicken because I made extra meat.
Add 1 can of whole kernel corn.
Boil 1 1/2 cups of elbow noodles. When done, drain and add to meat mixture. (I used Jovial gf elbow noodles)
Stir together, put in baking pan and add shredded cheese of choice to top. Bake at 350 until cheese is melted.
We really like it and are enjoying the leftovers!

A very proud moment for the dish I made tonight! Gluten-free tonkotsu ramen from scratch! 13 hours making a pork bone broth and then another couple of hours preparing the meat, toppings and tare... and 100% gluten-free! Used the Lotus Foods millet and brown rice ramen noodles that can be found at my local Costco, and then of course gluten-free soy sauce, miso paste and other sauces and spices for the marinades! What an adventure! Now to enjoy this labour of love! 😍
