Happy New Year my IG friends,

My friends, I wanted to take a moment to update you on some changes in the direction of my content on Instagram. My platform has centered around openly discussing issues of racial trauma and injustice.

These topics will always be deeply personal and important to me.

However, over time in my own healing transition, I have come to recognize how dwelling solely in past pains and struggle can inhibit and limit my own growth. It keeps us stuck and in bo***ge versus moving one forward.

While being aware of our traumatic histories, we still have a long way to go in healing.

So going forward in 2024, I hope to approach racial topics from a place of empowerment, resilience and communal care rather than re-enacting past traumas or projecting Black trauma p**n.

My renewed mission is to shed light on how human beings persevere and transition through challenges to create the lives they desire.

I am ready to talk about life transitions and complete life transformation - whether careers, relationships, homes or within. Journeys that make life more meaningful while faced with setbacks or uncertainty.

Highlighting empowering content versus content that may feel disempowering.

This is a change coming from a genuine place of my own evolution. I hope you'll continue this walk with me and provide thoughtful perspectives.

Know that my heart mission is still justice, equality and human dignity for the historically underserved and oppressed. I realized how our pain is exploited daily, and have no Internet in contributing to that agenda.

Thank you so much for your support. I appreciate those who have been impacted along this journey.

As the above quote says, the hallway doesn't have to be scary. It is a journey we can take together.

Feel free to share your thoughts below after reaching this. Looking forward to this journey ahead.

Hello IG Family,

This is Jonathon. This is the first time I have posted a long-form message on Instagram. Most of you know that I am a therapist, but may not know that I have been working behind the scenes on a podcast called .

This was a podcast launched early last year to give a voice to religious trauma, which is what I was curious about when I attended psychology school at Liberty University.

I started with the intent to serve Black people. However, was something more personal and intimate.

With the growing awareness of religious trauma and violence across the country and internationally, I am in the process of shifting priorities to discuss how religious trauma continues to show up in the Black community at large.

My colleague and I are planning on offering webinars twice monthly for those who are interested in learning more about religious trauma in the Black community, how it impacts everyone, and how to support those who experience Black religious trauma. We welcome everyone to our webinars, including allies of the Black community.

Our first session will be held this Thursday, 11/9, at 7 p.m. Eastern time (EST) via Zoom. Feel free to register for the webinar via Eventbrite. The link will be included in the bio.

Feel free to DM me with questions you might have. Look forward to seeing you on Thursday!

Please share this resource with your followers and networks, to learn more about the resources and supports that we are attempting to create for those in the community. Thank you for spreading the word in advance!

For the rest of 2023, I will be offering free mental health screenings to all residents in Virginia and Maryland. I know that there are clients who are struggling with finding a Black therapist, whether they be in-network or out-of-network. If you or know someone is searching for one, send them this information. I am working on connecting the dots: BIPOC clients who are searching and BIPOC therapists who are searching for BIPOC clients. Spread the word.

"I love my children, but hate being a parent."

You may have felt this way for some time, but have never been able to put together the words to say it out loud. Sometimes, just saying those words, "You know what, I hate being a parent", "I hate being a mother", or "I hate being a father" can be cathartic, but in many ways, can bring up a wave of guilt, resentment, and discomfort.

Society conditions us to imagine the role of the parent to be this beautiful, amazing, completely fulfilling journey with light, love, daffodils, and rainbows.

Some days you might feel this, but in other ways, this is not the reality, and reading a book, listening to a podcast, or writing about it is going to change the way you feel.

It is challenging, overwhelming, exhausting, montonous, which feels like a never ending battle.

You never get to clock out of your role as a parent, and become your old self again. It is a responsibility and weight to bear.

There is nothing wrong with admitting that. There is no shame in being honest about it. When we are denial about it, it can lead to abuse and harming yourself and others.

There is a big difference between loving children and enjoying the role of being a parent (mother or father) on a daily basis.

You may not admit to hating your sons or daughters. You may say that you love your children, but struggle with being honest with yourself that you are struggling and need to reach out for help.

It is now a time to separate how you feel about your children, who is a human being with feelings, emotions, and a personality, from how you feel about your role as a parent, which is very difficult and hard.

These two things are not mutually exclusive.

There is a stigma about parenting that our culture and society refuses to talk about. It is a taboo topic to talk about human beings and their desire and motivation to parent children. It is taboo to broach topics related to the darkest underbelly of raising children, and the mental and emotional toll it takes on people.

You may be reading this and say, "Thanks goodness it's not just me. I feel seen."

It's not just you, mom.

It's not just you, dad.

You are doing what you do to get through it. To deny the unsufferable feelings of "responsibility", is to operate under the guise of a lie.

The only way out is through. It is not all sunshine and rainbows. But can we admit to it?
