What is IFS-Informed EMDR—and why does it feel different from traditional trauma therapy?

IFS-Informed EMDR integrates two evidence-based approaches:

✨ EMDR, which helps the brain reprocess traumatic memories

✨ Internal Family Systems (IFS), which honors protective parts and inner wisdom

Together, they create a trauma-informed way to process experiences without forcing, flooding, or bypassing the nervous system.

This approach is especially supportive for people with:

• Complex or developmental trauma

• High-functioning coping strategies

• A history of feeling overwhelmed or shut down in therapy

Healing doesn’t have to be rushed to be effective.

It needs safety, collaboration, and enough time.

People often come to EMDR Intensives after trying everything else.

Not because therapy or past EMDR “didn’t work”—

but because weekly sessions don't offer enough time, continuity, or nervous system safety to go deeper.

Here are some common reasons clients choose intensives:

• “I understand my patterns, but I still feel stuck.”

• “My current therapy sessions aren't long enough, I don't feel like I'm getting anywhere.”

• “My nervous system needs more time to feel safe.”

• “I want focused time to heal without juggling daily life.”

EMDR Intensives offer extended, supported space to process trauma without rushing and without having to start and stop each week.

This isn’t about doing therapy faster.

It’s about creating the right conditions for change and real healing.

If you’re wondering whether an intensive might be a fit for you, you’re welcome to reach out.

You might have heard (or even googled!) the term "dysregulation" and been curious about what that really means. 🤔

Let's break it down.

Dysregulation means your system is out of balance. You might feel shut down and numb, or revved up and on edge — like you’re stuck in freeze, fawn, fight, or flight. It's hard to process emotions in this state.

In therapy, we work toward finding more regulation, to be better equipped to handle what is distressing without being overwhelmed.

A regulated nervous system is one that’s balanced, flexible, and able to observe + respond to stress or stimulation and then return to a steady state.

Using IFS, EMDR and IFS-Informed EMDR, we help our clients feel from a more regulated state--leading to noticeable, embodied healing.

What I wish people knew about healing (Part 2)

You don’t have to push through anything to heal.
Healing doesn’t require forcing memories, emotions, or breakthroughs.

Sustainable change happens when the nervous system feels safe enough to soften—at its own pace.

If you have a brain and a body, healing is possible—
no matter what has happened to you.

And sometimes, stopping and starting week after week can slow the process.
Having enough time and continuity can allow healing to unfold in a different way.

Save this if it resonates.

What I wish people knew about healing (Part 1)

Healing doesn’t always feel better right away.
Sometimes healing feels like feeling more.

Discomfort isn’t a sign something is wrong.
Often, it’s a sign that something long avoided is finally being allowed.

Understanding why you are the way you are can be helpful—
but lasting change happens when the body and nervous system are included, not just the mind.

Save this if it resonates.

Part 2 is coming.

If you’ve asked this, you’re not alone 💛

The short answer is no. A well-paced EMDR intensive isn’t about pushing and should not be overwhelming.

This is why our intensives are 3-5 consecutive days.

An intensive is about creating the time to slow down, build safety, and give your nervous system time to breathe — often more gently than weekly therapy allows — when we create the right conditions your system can digest what’s stuck and heal.

We have a new blog unpacking what intensives actually feel like, and why planning one 3-6 months in advance can be a caring, nervous-system-friendly choice.

You don’t have to rush healing.

You just need enough time and space to feel safe doing it.

In EMDR, we call negative beliefs and thought patterns “negative cognitions.”

These might sound like:
“I’m not good enough.”
“I am unsafe.”
“There is something wrong with me.”
“I am weak.”
“I’m stupid.”
“It’s my fault.”
“I am a failure.”

As we grow up and make sense of the world and our circumstances, it’s common for seeds of these beliefs to grow as we age, rooting our beliefs about ourselves into our everyday lives. Especially when trauma is involved.

We approach these beliefs using EMDR and IFS-informed EMDR. It's possible to find a different way of interacting with yourself and the world. Learn more about IFS-informed EMDR here: https://ifsemdrtherapy.com/ifsemdr-1

✨The holidays aren’t just about managing time — they’re about honoring your boundaries, too.✨

If you’re the woman who ends up organizing, hosting, giving, juggling expectations, and making it all look effortless... you’re not alone.

Behind the sparkle can sit exhaustion, anxiety, and a quiet disconnect from yourself.

We support women who’ve carried everything for so long their minds and bodies finally whisper, “enough.”

This season, let your boundaries be an act of self-respect — not self-protection. 💙

The holiday season often feels like we *should* be joyful, but for many, it's a time when grief, sadness, and even anger feel overwhelming.

This time of year can amplify the absence of loved ones, remind us of past hurts, or trigger family system struggles. It’s okay if your experience isn't wrapped up in a pretty bow.

At IFS EMDR Therapy Group, we understand that these parts of you deserve to be seen with deep and compassionate care. We use IFS-informed EMDR to gently process the underlying pain—helping you create space from the heavy emotions so you can navigate the holidays with more peace.

You don't have to push those feelings away. There's support waiting for you. 🔗 Click the link here to schedule a consultation: https://ifsemdrtherapy.clientsecure.me/request/clinician
