Maternal Mental Health Matters. Period.
These last few months have felt like an all-out assault on maternal health. We cannot be silent about how serious this is, and how scary it is to be pregnant/postpartum in this country.

I've got a ton to say about this, but trying to manage my rage with a quick reminder that actual scientists and actual doctors do not believe this.
Fact 1: A few studies have shown a CORRELATION between Tylenol. Many robust studies have shown no correlation. Lest we forget, correlation does not equal causation.
Fact 2: Tylenol is an important and safe medication to manage maternal fevers (actually known to be dangerous to the developing fetus).
Fact 3: Our strongest research suggests autism is not caused by a singular thing, and this bad science and ableist rhetoric ignore the actual science, and more importantly, the diversity and humanity of autistic people.

There's a lot more to say (scream) about, but for now, sending extra love to my clients and friends who are parents of autistic kiddos ๐Ÿ’œ

Anyone else have what I jokingly call "border collie energy"- you need a task, a job, or something productive to do at all times? ๐Ÿ™‹โ€โ™€๏ธ

I certainly do and so do many of my patients. What do we have in common? We are recovering over achievers and perfectionists whose worth can get a little too tied up in achieving and doing.

For those of us working on breaking out of this pattern, unexpected downtime can be hard. Some ideas to get you through

1. Remind yourself you are worthy of rest and downtime.

2. Practice mindfulness - either in a mediation or in an activity that you can do with intention

3. Get out of your house/office and take a breath

4. Praise yourself for taking a break- no one else will

5. Point your finger at the real bad guy. Hint: it's not you. Hustle culture, perfection, cultural expectations, gender expectations, bootstrap mentality. The list goes on and on

Deep breaths. You got this!

As a perinatal psychologist, I work with NICU parents at all stages in their journey every day. As a parent, my NICU journey started almost 12 years ago. Like the parents I support, for me, it didn't end when we left the hospital. It's a part of the story of how I became a parent, and is woven into the story of our family. The NICU sticks with you, even if you are lucky enough to bring your baby home.

This month, we honor the 1:10 babies and families who deserve support and acknowledgment, we advocate for all the meaningful ways NICUs can support families so that everyone has access to them, and we share our gratitude for the amazing nurses and doctors who care for babies and families.

Widening our perspective is such a great coping strategy, and yet one I see misused all the time. The intent of "zooming out" during a difficult experience is to accept your feelings, take in new perspectives, and allow for "both/and" thinking.

Taking perspective does not mean minimizing your hard feelings, judging your feelings, comparing yourself to others, or practicing toxic positivity.
