Did you know August is the anniversary of an LGBTQ+ riot that predates Stonewall?

The Compton's Cafeteria Riot occurred in San Francisco in August 1966. The exact date is lost to time. Police and the diner's management had repeatedly harassed and arrested the drag queens, trans women, and other gender non-conforming patrons of Compton's Cafeteria. One night, the diner goers had enough of the police's discrimination. They fought back.

Although the Compton's Cafeteria Riot happened three years before the Stonewall Riots, it's a less widely known part of LGBTQ+ history. Because of a lack of news coverage in 1966, the riot was largely forgotten until trans activist and historian Susan Stryker began researching the event in 1995. Stryker interviewed people who had lived through the riot and released a documentary in 2005, "Screaming Queens: The Riot at Compton’s Cafeteria."

Happy World B**M Day!

Do you know these three common B**M frameworks?

SSC stands for Safe, Sane, & Consensual. It means that whatever is happening in a B**M scene should meet these three criteria, as agreed upon by everyone involved in the scene. It's fairly easy to understand and an older concept, more widely known in the community. But critics say that "sane" can have ableist connotations.

RACK stands for Risk Aware Consensual Kink. This framework acknowledges that not everything in B**M can be deemed completely safe. It's important that all partners have full awareness of safety concerns. This can require a certain amount of research into potential injuries from planned activities. But no one can predict everything.

The 4 Cs are Caring, Communication, Consent, and Caution. This is a newer framework focusing on interpersonal connections between scene participants.

Consent is the common thread between each of these frameworks. No matter which one feels right for you and your partners, we hope you have fun celebrating World B**M Day!

July is Disability Pride Month!

People with disabilities are polyamorous, kinky, and sexy. Having a disability does not mean a person can't have fulfilling romantic or sexual relationships. Anyone can be disabled at any point and almost everyone will become disabled at some point.

The Pincus Center is a safe, non-judgmental, sex-positive space to explore yourself and your relationships. You can bring your whole self, all of your intersecting identities, and find support here. We offer therapy and coaching that adapts to you, not the other way around.

📅 July 14: International Non-Binary People’s Day
🌈 This day, set intentionally between International Men’s Day and International Women’s Day, recognizes those who live outside the binary—people who aren’t exclusively men or women.

But nonbinary people don’t exist on a sliding scale between two options. They exist beyond the binary. And they always have.

Whether someone identifies as nonbinary, agender, bigender, genderfluid, or under the broad nonbinary umbrella, they deserve visibility, protection, joy, and community.

As Katje van Loon, who founded this day, said in her interview with the BBC: “We can feel invisible in a world that still hasn't completely understood what we are. So it's nice to have a day that recognises our existence. Does it have to be a day where we're out in the streets marching? No. But it would be nice to get some flowers.”

🌼 So today, we see you. We celebrate you. And yes—we’re handing you flowers.

🗓 Nonbinary Awareness Week runs through July 20. Let’s keep the energy going.
