What is Dysmenorrhea?

The biomedical term for painful menstrual periods is “dysmenorrhea.” Let me paint you a picture of what dysmenorrhea looks like — painful menstruation with pelvic pain and cramping. This can include heavy flow, passing large clots, uterine fibroids, or even endometriosis.

To learn how to treat dysmenorrhea and experience a less painful menstruation cycle read our blog titled "Treating Dysmenorrhea Using Traditional Chinese Medicine" on our website.

Gua Sha is a wonder technique to release adhesions in the fascia and superficial muscle layers. The motion of pushing or scraping across the skin forces adhesions in the fascia and superficial muscle layer to release, which relieves pain and increases microcirculation allowing the area to properly heal.

🍂 Fall and Grief:

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), each organ and each emotion has an associated season. Fall is the season of the Lungs and their associated emotion, grief.

The Lung system in TCM expands beyond the normal organ function of breathing and circulation to include nourishing the skin and nose, regulating water, and managing grief. Those who experience grief may find it recurring or becoming stronger in the fall season and this is normal.

Grief, like other emotions, is meant to be experienced so that it can move through and be allowed to resolve. Resolutions can take time, so please be patient and gentle with yourself. There are many ways to manage grief, and we encourage you to find the best method that works for you. Don’t be afraid to seek professional help if you are unable to manage on your own.

Getting the right amount of sleep is one of the most important things you can do for self-care. Both the amount of sleep and quality of sleep are key. If you have ever pulled an all-nighter for school or work, or have kids then you know what we’re talking about. If you’re not trying to stay up, but still can’t fall asleep or don’t sleep well through the night then Chinese Medicine can help. Both acupuncture and herbal medicine are effective in treating insomnia. Many of our patients mention that they sleep great the night after a treatment, even if we’re not focusing on their sleep. And if you need more support then there are lots of different herbal formulas that can be used regardless of what kind of insomnia you have. These formulas range from the old school classical, like Suan Zao Ren Tang or Sour Jujube Decoction, to more modern combinations like Schisandra ZZZ, which combines valerian root with Chinese herbs that are nourishing and calming.

TCM understands both Diabetes and PCOS through similar root imbalances

🌸 Spleen Qi Deficiency – Poor digestive function leads to dampness and phlegm in the body, contributing to weight gain, cyst formation, and unstable blood sugar.
🌸 Phlegm-Damp Accumulation – Seen in ovarian cysts, acne, and abdominal bloating; also linked to insulin resistance.
🌸Yin Deficiency with Internal Heat – Common in diabetes, causing thirst, dry mouth, restlessness, and sugar cravings.
🌸 Liver Qi Stagnation – Stress and emotional strain disrupt the menstrual cycle, ovulation, and metabolic regulation, which can lead to unstable blood sugar and cyst formation as well.

Moxa is frequently used in conjunction with acupuncture to treat many types of pain as well as women’s health concerns. Moxibustion, also known as mugwort, or Artemisia Vulgaris, may be placed over certain acupuncture points and burned while your skin is protected with cardboard. This therapy is wonderful treatment to deeply nourish and support the body.
