La Clínica del Pueblo

La Clínica del Pueblo La Clínica del Pueblo What started as a small volunteer-based clinic has since expanded thanks to community supporters.

Founded in 1983, La Clínica del Pueblo was a response to the physical and mental health care needs of Salvadoran and other Central American refugees escaping violence and war at home. Today we provide services for over 4,000 patients a year. Through health fairs, charlas, and workshops we have reached thousands in the community yearly, providing the tools and education for thousands to take contro

l of their health. Yearly, we also conduct over 17,000 interpretations for medical visits and consultations for DC-area residents. We are currently operating at six locations: two fully-operating clinics in DC and Maryland, three community health centers, and a school-based mental health program in Prince George’s County, Maryland.

As part of our series during the final day of Nurses Week, we’re highlighting the voices and stories behind the incredible care provided every day. When asked about their favorite part of being a nurse and what makes working for La Clínica so special, here is what Yurina Quintana, RN Care Manager, shared:⁣⁣

𝐅𝐚𝐯𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐞 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐛𝐞𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚 𝐧𝐮𝐫𝐬𝐞:
My favorite part of being a nurse is the connection I build with my patients. It’s not just about treating a condition it’s about understanding their story, their challenges, and what matters most to them. That relationship allows me to provide care that is more personal and meaningful. Overall, what I love most is knowing that my work goes beyond tasks—I’m helping people feel supported, heard, and cared for.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
𝗪𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐋𝐚 𝐂𝐥í𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐚 𝐢𝐬 𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐛𝐞𝐜𝐚𝐮𝐬𝐞:⁣⁣
Working at La Clínica del Pueblo is special to me because it goes beyond traditional nursing. As an RN Care Manager I’m not just managing conditions, I’m supporting people through very complex life situations. What makes this work meaningful is the population we serve. Many of my patients face barriers like language, transportation, housing instability, or limited access to care. Being able to help bridge those gaps and advocate for them makes my role feel purposeful every day.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
On this final day of Nurses Week, we proudly celebrate the dedication, compassion, and patient‑centered care that our nurses bring to the community every single day.

As part of our series during Nurses Week, we’re highlighting the voices and stories behind the incredible care provided every day. When asked about their favorite part of being a nurse and what makes working for La Clínica so special, here is what Andres Fernandez, Care Team Registered Nurse, shared:⁣⁣
⁣⁣
𝐅𝐚𝐯𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐞 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐛𝐞𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚 𝐧𝐮𝐫𝐬𝐞:⁣⁣
My favorite part of being a nurse is the human connection—receiving a smile, a “thank you,” or even a blessing from a patient whose life I’ve touched. Those moments remind me every day why I chose this profession.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
𝗪𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐋𝐚 𝐂𝐥í𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐚 𝐢𝐬 𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐛𝐞𝐜𝐚𝐮𝐬𝐞:⁣⁣
I have worked at different FQHCs in the area, and I have seen firsthand that at La Clínica del Pueblo, the mission and values are truly lived out. In fact, we often go above and beyond to provide high‑quality care to all of our patients, regardless of their background, skin color, sexual orientation or gender identity, or insurance status.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
I always tell patients: “At the clinic, we do everything possible to help you and overcome any barrier so you can receive the best care—just reach out to us.”⁣⁣ That commitment to compassion, access, and community is what makes this place so special.⁣⁣

As part of our series during Nurses Week, we’re highlighting the voices and stories behind the incredible care provided every day. When asked about her favorite part of being a nurse and what makes working at La Clinica special, here is what Director of Quality and Risk Management, Dawn Louisa, shared:⁣

𝐅𝐚𝐯𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐞 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐛𝐞𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚 𝐧𝐮𝐫𝐬𝐞:⁣
"There are so many things that I love about being a nurse. I love that nurses have been considered the most trusted profession for 20 consecutive years. I love that one of our primary objectives is compassion for others. And I love that nursing affords us the opportunity to fulfill numerous roles that are both clinical and non-clinical.⁣"

𝗪𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐭 𝐋𝐚 𝐂𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐚 𝐢𝐬 𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐛𝐞𝐜𝐚𝐮𝐬𝐞:⁣
"Working at La Clinica is special for me because after a brief departure from community-based healthcare, I came to learn that I am at my best when I am in a position where I can use my skills to support the delivery of high quality care to fellow community members. La Clinica has provided me with the opportunity to serve a community that may otherwise be systemically neglected and in doing so, directly challenge systemic racism in healthcare.⁣⁣⁣"

As part of our series during Nurses Week, we’re highlighting the voices and stories behind the incredible care provided every day. When asked about her favorite parts of being a nurse and what makes working at La Clínica del Pueblo special, here is what our Clinical Nurse Manager, Julia Davis, shared:⁣⁣
⁣⁣
𝐅𝐚𝐯𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐞 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐛𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚 𝐧𝐮𝐫𝐬𝐞 (𝐈 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐭𝐰𝐨):⁣⁣
Family legacy – both my parents are nurses. I have 3 sisters and we’re all caregivers: two teachers, a therapist and a nurse. I love being from a family of caregivers.⁣⁣
The vast majority of my nursing career has been dedicated to serving vulnerable communities. Providing high-quality health care to under-resourced communities is a radical act in a healthcare system that is driven by profitability. Knowing that my work contributes to saving lives through the provision of basic health services is so fulfilling and reassuring in these very complex and scary times.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
𝗪𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐭 𝐋𝐚 𝐂𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐚 𝐢𝐬 𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐛𝐞𝐜𝐚𝐮𝐬𝐞:⁣⁣
As the nurse manager, it is special to work here because our team is so connected and dedicated to the community we serve! The nurses at LCDP pour so much love and care into the work they do. It is an honor to work with them.⁣⁣
