National Coalition of STD Directors is implementing a coordinated national strategy to strengthen the disease intervention (DI) workforce by developing and delivering high-quality, standardized training and continuing education via ASPPH’s UniversiDI to the United States disease intervention (DI) workforce. This organization will advance the Certified in Disease Intervention (CDI) exam and credential through a network of regional training centers that are equipped to address the evolving needs of public health professionals engaged in disease intervention and outbreak response.

Led by ASPPH’s Center for Public Health Workforce Development, supported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and in collaboration with the National Board of Public Health Examiners (Certification in Public Health - CPH, by NBPHE), the CDI Project is building a national certification program and educational pathways for the disease intervention workforce.

HIV can affect everyone and does not discriminate against gender, race and ethnicity, where one lives, and of course, age. In 2022, the CDC reported persons aged 50 and older accounted for approximately:
💡 16% of new HIV diagnoses
💡 54% of people living with HIV

The good news? Thanks to the effectiveness of antiretroviral therapy (ART), people with HIV are living longer and healthier lives. However, it's important that people are tested regularly in order to find HIV as soon as possible. Largely due to stigma and lack of information, older adults are less likely to be screened for HIV by providers or to seek out screening on their own. Recently, three expert scientific leaders left CDC along with Senate-confirmed CDC Director Susan Monarez. Among the leaders who submitted their resignations after the ousting of Dr. Monarez were Dr. Demetre Daskalakis, head of the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases; Dr. Daniel Jernigan, head of the National Center for Emerging and Zoonotic Infectious Diseases; and Dr. Debra Houry, CDC Chief Medical Officer.

"No vision of the CDC or public health is served by the loss of expert scientific leadership. The American people need a CDC that can respond to emerging outbreaks and monitor disease threats to the public, and it must have leadership from career expert scientists who have the knowledge and skills to protect Americans and keep them healthy and safe from harm," said Elizabeth Finley, Interim Executive Director of NCSD, in a recent statement.

NCSD proudly recognizes Diagnostics Direct for its deep and sustained partnership over the past few years, supporting critical public health initiatives and helping strengthen the nation’s STI response.

Throughout the year, Diagnostics Direct has taken tangible steps to expand access to syphilis testing and education:
✨ 10,000 Syphilis Health Check tests donated in June to KFF’s Greater Than HIV/STDs & Walgreens National HIV Testing Day initiative.
✨ Ongoing partnership with the Clinical Training Center for Sexual and Reproductive Health (CTC-SRH) to implement rapid syphilis testing in Title X clinics.
✨ Creation of implementation resources, including protocols, quality control logs, and testing forms in direct response to community feedback.

For these contributions, Diagnostics Direct was named the 2025 Rapid Syphilis Testing Company of the Year.

Happy ! This month—and every month—let’s remember that sexual health is more than just treating STIs or prescribing birth control. It’s about people feeling informed, respected, and confident in their body and their choices. 💪

Sexual health also means:
✨ Bodily autonomy
✨ Sexual justice
✨ Reproductive choice
✨ Access to medically accurate information

…and so much more.

Everyone deserves the right to make empowered choices, access compassionate care, and live free from shame and stigma. Let’s celebrate by advocating for a world where sexual wellness is a human right, not a privilege.
