Temperatures in DC can still fluctuate quite a bit in April. A proper warm-up becomes even more important when training outdoors.

Before your workout, spend five minutes doing:
• light aerobic movement
• dynamic mobility
• a few strength activation exercises

A short warm-up prepares muscles and joints for the demands of training.

“Annie is absolutely amazing. I’ve worked with dozens of physicals therapists over the years, and no one can match Annie.

She listens, answers all of my numerous questions in a way that is easy to understand, and helps me be stronger and healthier despite my hEDS diagnosis.”

Many sports injuries don’t happen suddenly. They develop gradually over time.

Early signs to pay attention to include:
• discomfort that appears at the start of activity
• stiffness the morning after training
• pain that returns during similar workouts

Addressing these issues early often prevents longer interruptions to training.

Meet Marina.

Marina specializes in pelvic and women’s health physical therapy, working with patients experiencing pelvic pain, urinary incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse, and other pelvic floor concerns. She is especially passionate about supporting individuals during pregnancy and throughout the postpartum period as they return to exercise, daily activities, and life with a new baby.

Her approach combines hands-on therapy, targeted strength work, breath training, and movement education to restore pelvic floor function and help patients feel confident and strong in their bodies again.

Marina believes that understanding how your body works is one of the most powerful tools for long-term recovery and staying active. Outside of treating patients, she enjoys practicing and teaching yoga, riding her Peloton, and spending time with family.

“One of the things that I love most about our sessions is her realistic step-by-step approach. For example, I’ve realized that my whole life I would hold my breath a dozen times a minute. She’s helped me learn that this is the case, and step by step integrate proper breathing into my life—first by pairing it with simple movements, then, adding it to my workouts, etc.”

Strength training is one of the most effective ways to reduce injury risk in active adults.

Exercises that challenge balance and single-leg control are especially valuable because most athletic movements happen on one leg.

Examples include:
• single-leg Romanian deadlifts
• step-downs
• split squats

These movements build the stability needed for running, lifting, and field sports.

As the weather improves, more workouts move outdoors. If you’re returning to running, cycling, or field sports, check these key mobility areas:

• ankle mobility
• hip extension
• thoracic spine rotation

Limitations in these areas often contribute to knee, hip, and back pain when training volume increases.

**Testimonial Tuesday**
“I have had 2 cases of tennis elbow in the past 4 years. After great success working with Annie the first time in 2021 - with dry needling and her recommended exercises - I sought her help again recently. Once again, she was able to address my injury and alleviate my pain through tailored exercises and dry needling. She’s great to work with; I recommend her without hesitation!”

One of the most common mistakes active people make when returning to training is increasing volume too quickly.

Your tissues adapt to stress gradually. A good rule of thumb is to increase total training load by no more than about 10 percent per week.

If you feel soreness that lasts more than a couple of days or changes how you move, it may be a sign your body needs more recovery.

Caitlin works with a wide range of active patients, including runners, field sport athletes, and individuals recovering from orthopedic injuries or surgery who want to return confidently to their normal training. She also treats patients dealing with dizziness, balance issues, and concussion-related symptoms, helping them safely return to activity and daily life.
