How can communities design transportation systems that truly serve everyone? As America’s population ages, local governments face a growing challenge: ensuring older adults and people with disabilities can move safely, independently and with dignity. In this insightful ICMA - International City/County Management Association article, Laura M. Keyes, PhD, outlines the 3 C’s—Challenges, Community Capacity and Commitment—that public managers must address to build responsive transportation systems.

Featuring lessons from San Antonio’s “No Rider Left Behind” pilot and practical takeaways for local leaders. Read the full article: https://ow.ly/uvnj50WZxKu.

Examining the 3 “C’s” of understanding the challenges, assessing community capacity, and making the commitment.

September 22–26 is National Falls Prevention Awareness Week, hosted by the National Council on Aging. Why is this important to transportation providers? A AAA Foundation Traffic Safety study finds that older drivers with a history of falling are 40 percent more likely to be involved in vehicle crashes than their peers. Collaborate with your local aging program who provides falls prevention classes and present your transportation information to their participations. This is another collaboration to inform those who may really benefit from your services. https://ow.ly/wk0o50WQqqw

What can Tokyo teach us about mobility for older adults? A recent study compared travel habits in the United States and Japan—and the results are eye-opening.

--In transit-rich Tokyo, older adults are more likely to walk, bike and use public transit.
--In the U.S., car-dependent neighborhoods limit mobility and increase isolation.
--Urban density and proximity to transit = more social trips, less driving and greater independence.

As 96 percent of California’s residential land is zoned for single-family homes, many older adults face tough choices: stay in inaccessible housing or leave their communities. It’s time to rethink land use and transit planning to support aging in place. Read more: https://ow.ly/fPU550WQqhk.

As America’s population ages, the need to provide safe and efficient mobility from far-flung suburbs and subdivisions grows more acute. Our current transportation systems, land use, and development patterns all but mandate private car ownership and driving – which is…

For 93-year-old Ellie Moller, staying active means more than just working out—it means staying connected. Thanks to A Little Help, a Colorado nonprofit, volunteers like Richie Miller are helping older adults maintain independence by offering rides to appointments, events and even coffee dates. With Colorado’s aging population growing rapidly, the demand for volunteer drivers is higher than ever.

The nonprofit A Little Help has seen a rise in transportation demand from the more than 2,000 older adults it serves. Officials point to a growing population of people over 65 in Colorado.
