🧠 While Parkinson’s disease is considered a movement disorder, it is also associated with a diverse range of non-motor symptoms. Cognitive impairment in Parkinson’s disease is a common non-motor complication that can impact daily functioning, the course of treatment, and the required level of patient care.

In our latest blog, we discuss common cognitive changes in Parkinson’s disease patients, proposed causes of cognitive impairment in Parkinson’s disease, and methods for evaluating cognitive changes throughout the disease course to inform patient treatment and care.

While aging is the biggest risk factor for developing neurodegenerative diseases, there are other risk factors involved such as biological s*x, lifestyle, vascular conditions, and hearing loss.

Research shows that women are more likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease, and men are more likely to develop Parkinson’s disease. Lifestyle habits like exercise, diet, and alcohol and to***co usage also play a critical role in neurological health.
Those with vascular conditions and hearing loss may also be more likely to develop neurodegnerative diseases.

These factors indicate that a well-rounded approach to brain health management is important for maintaining cognitive function and health.

🧠 Making an accurate diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease is essential to receiving appropriate, effective treatment. Early diagnosis and early treatment are paramount to reducing the risk of disease progression, limiting the effects on patient quality of life, and potentially lowering long-term treatment costs. However, there is a long list of conditions that can mimic Parkinson’s disease. Because the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease vary significantly from patient to patient, and symptoms often overlap with other conditions, obtaining an accurate diagnosis can be challenging, particularly in the early stages of the disease. In our latest blog, we take a look at conditions that can mimic Parkinson’s disease and how artificial intelligence may pave the way to earlier, more accurate, cost-effective Parkinson’s disease diagnosis.

🧠 While a completely normal and natural process, aging causes changes to structure and function in just about every part of your body, including your cardiovascular system, your bones and muscles, your digestive system, your eyes and ears, your skin, and your brain.

Even with this understanding, it is normal to worry about brain health as you age, and it is important to be thinking about and monitoring brain health to detect abnormal changes as early as possible.

In our latest blog, we discuss normal aging of the brain as it relates to structure and function and how to maintain and monitor brain health as you age.

🧠 Aspects of possible Parkinson’s disease have been found in very early documents, indicating the existence of Parkinson’s disease may have been known since ancient times. However, James Parkinson was the first to medically describe Parkinson’s disease as a neurological syndrome in 1817.

While there is still much to be discovered, our understanding of Parkinson’s disease has grown immensely over the past two centuries.

In our latest blog, we provide an overview of the history of Parkinson’s disease, highlighting important milestones of Parkinson’s disease pathophysiology, diagnosis, and treatment.

🧠 According to the Harvard NeuroDiscovery Center, five million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s disease, one million with Parkinson’s disease, 400,000 with multiple sclerosis, 30,000 with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, and 30,000 with Huntington’s disease. Because neurodegenerative diseases typically arise in mid to late life, these numbers are projected to grow significantly as the population ages.

As the prevalence of neurodegenerative diseases rises, there is an urgent need to better understand what causes neurodegenerative diseases, as this will inform new, novel treatment approaches.

In our latest blog, we will discuss the current thinking surrounding the cause of neurodegenerative diseases.

🧠While there is no cure to Alzheimer’s, there are certian steps we can take to improve our lifestyle and help prevent Alzheimer’s naturally.

Brain health is heavily affected by cardiovascular risk factors. In order to manage cardiovascular risk factors, we can increase physical activity, eat healthy, quit smoking, manage stress, and control your blood pressure and cholesterol.

Studies also show that maintaining mental and social activity is also important for supporting brain health.

Last, but certianly not least, sleep is one of the most underrated aspects of health management. Adequate sleep is vital for helping prevent dementia, cognitive impairment, and Alzheimer’s.

Altoida - Better Brain Health!

What if you could detect Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) more than 8 years prior to its onset, using an iPhone only? The biggest challenge for AD patients today according to World Alzheimer Report 2016 is that 75% of the cases are diagnosed only after irreversible damage has happened to the brain. Recent studies show that 10 additional brain health quality years can be gained through prevention strategies triggered by early screening for AD risk (FINGER, Finland; ACTIVE, New England Research Institutes). At Altoida we have developed a methodology based on longitudinal clinical studies with more than 2700 AD patients over a period of 8 years. After taking an iPhone app based test for 10 minutes, we are able to tell you if you will develop AD within 6 years from now with an accuracy of 94%. We received endorsements by US and EU Alzheimer’s Associations. We’re on a moonshot mission to fight AD in three steps: 1. Delaying the onset of the disease enabled by earlier detection. 2. Prevention, driven by precision medicine and digital behavioural interventions. 3. Help finding and validating a cure by analyzing millions of patient datasets and gain holistic understanding of complex brain diseases.
