Race disparities continue to be a factor in many facets of health care for Black women including breast care. Washington, D.C. is plagued with some of the highest breast cancer mortality rates in the country. In the District, predominantly black neighborhoods are disproportionately affected: Ward 7 has the highest rate of breast cancer and Ward 5 has the highest mortality rate.

– under Dr. Lucile Adams-Campbell’s leadership through the Office of Minority Health and Health Disparities Research at – is dedicated to providing community outreach and patient navigation services for cancer prevention and early detection to underserved women in the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area.

Almost two decades ago, the CBCC began as a mammography site and has since integrated cancer prevention and control as well as clinical trials. In 2020, the CBCC enrolled over 150 women into ongoing research studies and helped almost 300 women access breast imaging services around the city. During this time, several women were diagnosed with breast cancer – discoveries that may have gone unfound without the CBCC.

New Name, Same Great Cause.

Since its inception, the Lombardi Women event has become one of the largest, most sought-after events for Washington’s top influential women business leaders committed to the fight against breast cancer.

The event, which benefits Georgetown Lombardi’s Nina Hyde Center for Breast Cancer Research, is a women’s only dinner featuring a cocktail reception, silent auction and award presentation to recognize outstanding individuals in their fight against breast cancer. The Nina Hyde Center for Breast Cancer Research was established in 1989 by designer Ralph Lauren and the late Washington Post Company president Katherine Graham, as a tribute to their friend Nina Hyde.

Georgetown Lombardi’s breast cancer program is home to nearly 70 breast cancer researchers and clinicians who study breast cancer exclusively. One of just 50 National Cancer Institute designated comprehensive cancer centers in the nation, Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center is the only cancer center of its kind in the Washington, DC area.
