Pellegrino Center for Clinical Bioethics

Pellegrino Center for Clinical Bioethics Housed at Georgetown University, we bring expertise in theology, philosophy, and clinical bioethics The Edmund D.

Pellegrino Center for Clinical Bioethics (PCCB) at Georgetown University Medical Center (located in Bldg D 236) was established over two decades ago in order to create a center of excellence, filling a unique need for bioethics that is directly oriented towards clinical medicine and strongly rooted in the Catholic and Jesuit tradition. In its situation at Georgetown University, it complements the

activity and interests of the renowned Kennedy Institute of Ethics, the Philosophy Department and Law Center. The faculty of the PCCB have appointments in the Medical School, Nursing School, and Graduate School. They teach, conduct research, and participate in patient care. They are responsible for bioethics education at Georgetown Medical School and in the residency programs at Medstar Georgetown University Hospital, as well as graduate medical programs locally. In addition, the PCCB provides the ethics consultation service for the hospital. The PCCB faculty are actively engaged in a wide variety of research projects, and offer further education and training through our visiting scholars program. PCCB faculty serve as consultants, volunteers, public speakers, and panelists for organizations and agencies, both private and governmental.

Covert Consciousness and Clinical Ethics: Neuroscience and Normative Obligations

Joseph J. Fins, MD, MACP, FRCP
The E. William Davis, Jr., MD Professor of Medical Ethics & Professor of Medicine; Chief, Division of Medical Ethics, Weill Cornell Medical College

In Conversation with James Giordano, PhD, MPhil

Iterative developments in neuroscientific and neurotechnological research and their varied applications give rise to both increasingly capable diagnostics and therapeutics, as well as several ethical issues, questions and dilemmas. Of specific import to clinical bioethics is covert consciousness, its demonstration, and its relevance to the beginning and end of life and to the scope and viability of medical treatments.

This year's Twentieth Annual John Collins Harvey Lecture will feature a conversation between Dr. Joseph Fins (https://weillcornell.org/jfins) , E. William Davis, Jr., MD Professor of Medical Ethics & Professor of Medicine; Chief, Division of Medical Ethics, Weill Cornell Medical College, and Dr. James Giordano (https://clinicalbioethics.georgetown.edu/jgiordano/) , Chief of the Neuroethics Studies Program at the Pellegrino Center for Clinical Bioethics, and Professor of Neurology at Georgetown University Medical Center. Key points of discourse will include operationally defining covert consciousness; the validity and value of using current and emerging neurotechnologies to demonstrate its presence or absence; and implications of covert consciousness for various perspectives on the human person and human life.
