Following the Example of "Snap, Crackle, Pop"
The following fundraising message was written by Bowen Center associate faculty member and chair of the Fundraising Committee, Jake Morrill:
In the late 1920s, ready-made cereal was still an outlier in the breakfast foods market. People were more familiar with oatmeal and porridge. Of the off-the-shelf, pre-packaged options, the two leading companies were Kellogg and Post.
When the Great Depression hit, the two companies responded differently. Post behaved in predictable fashion, cutting costs and trimming its ad budget. But Kellogg doubled its marketing budget, especially in the new medium of radio.
By 1933, Kellogg's profits were up by almost 30% and it had established itself as the leader of the off-the-shelf breakfast foods market, as it continues to be today. If you’re familiar with “Snap, Crackle, Pop,” you’ve been touched by Kellogg’s bold decision early in the Great Depression.
Like decision-makers in the early ‘30s, ninety years later, we find ourselves facing an uncertain decade. An acronym to describe these conditions—coined by the military and borrowed by business—is “VUCA,” for Volatile, Uncertain, Complex, and Ambiguous. In the face of VUCA conditions, some organizations, like Post, will manage its resources in miserly fashion. In the same conditions, other organizations, like Kellogg, will fund and pursue a principled course forward.
In the past year, the Bowen Center has adapted to the challenge of a global pandemic by re-inventing its mode of program delivery, and even adding programs. Because of these moves, after only a year, more people now are exposed to Bowen theory. As Kellogg saw the potential in radio in the 1930s, the Bowen Center in the 2020s is investing in technology upgrades, to extend its reach and strengthen its capacity to meet the moment in this emerging era.
The Bowen Center's fiscal year ends on August 31. To those of you who’ve already made your gift this year, thank you. To those of you still considering the right amount to give, I hope you’ll consider adopting more the spirit of Kellogg than Post, and place your bet on an organization moving boldly into the future.
Imagine a world where the eight concepts of Bowen theory were as familiar as “Snap, Crackle, Pop,” and as nourishing for a person ready to meet the day as a hearty breakfast.
Your gift today can make that world more possible.
