How Dental Implants Prevent Bone Loss
When a tooth is lost, the jawbone in that area can begin to shrink without stimulation. Dental implants mimic natural tooth roots and help preserve bone structure, keeping your jaw healthy and strong. Learn more about the long-term benefits of implants by scheduling a consultation with us.

Oral Diseases That Require Oral Surgery

Serious oral diseases may necessitate oral surgery for effective treatment. Conditions like advanced periodontitis, involving severe gum and bone damage, often require surgical intervention. Oral cancers may require surgery for tumor removal and reconstruction. Impacted wisdom teeth can lead to infections, requiring surgical extraction. Jaw misalignments (orthognathic surgery) address functional and aesthetic concerns. Oral surgery plays a crucial role in managing complex dental issues. Regular dental check-ups aid in early detection, preventing the progression to surgical stages.

Do you have a tooth extraction coming up? While recovery time varies, most people take a few days to a week for initial healing. Follow post-op instructions diligently for a smooth recovery. Expect some swelling and discomfort initially, which can be managed with prescribed medications and ice packs. Avoid vigorous activities and follow a soft diet during the initial days. Full recovery, including bone and soft tissue healing, may take several weeks. Attend follow-up appointments to ensure proper healing.

When Is Bone Grafting Needed?

If your dentist or oral surgeon has recommended that you undergo a bone graft procedure, you probably lack sufficient jawbone mass to anchor a new dental implant.

A bone graft procedure involves the donation of bone into the proposed implant site so that a dental implant will have proper support.

Steps of a Bone Graft:

• You'll be anesthetized to prevent any pain.
• Your oral surgeon will form a small incision.
• They will place the donated bone into the treatment site.
• After the donated bone has fused, you will return for another appointment for implant placement.

When Is a Sinus Lift and Augmentation Recommended?

A dentist or oral surgeon may recommend that you undergo a sinus lift and augmentation if you want dental implants, but have insufficient jawbone mass to anchor them.

You may be advised to undergo a sinus lift and augmentation if your jaw has experienced bone loss due to:

• Gum disease
• Cancer
• Birth defects

You may also benefit from a sinus lift and augmentation if you have experienced bone resorption, or bone loss, in the area of a missing tooth.

A few months after your sinus lift and augmentation, you should be able to have a dental implant placed.

How to Care For Your Mouth After Teeth Extraction

After you have a tooth extracted, you'll need to take care of yourself to speed up the recovery process and prevent complications.

The initial healing phase typically lasts about two weeks.

The most important thing to do after your tooth extraction is to avoid disturbing the blood clot in the area, which halts bleeding and protects underlying tissues.

✅ Avoid hot foods and beverages.
✅ Do not drink alcoholic beverages or smoke.
✅ Do not take aspirin, which inhibits blood clotting.
✅ Do not spit, rinse your mouth, blow your nose, or use a straw for the first 24 hours.

Stick to eating soft foods like yogurt, mashed potatoes, pudding and scrambled eggs.

Avoid foods that are hard, crunchy, hot and spicy.

What Is a Sinus Lift and Augmentation?

Dental implants require firm support from the jawbone that they are connected to, for long-term success.

A sinus lift and augmentation raises the sinus area so that new bone develops, allowing for an implant.

If inadequate bone is present for an implant, an augmentation procedure is first carried out.

After the graft has matured, normally in several months, augmentation will be complete.

You may benefit from a sinus lift and augmentation if:

• You have a large amount of bone loss in your jaw.
• You are missing more than one tooth in the back of your mouth.
• You need dental implants to assist with missing maxillary teeth.

What Are Impacted Canines?

Impacted canines develop when one (or both) of the canine teeth do not properly emerge, remaining instead in the jawbone.

Causes of Impacted Canines

• Extra teeth: Extra teeth in your mouth can negatively impact the proper development of canine teeth.
• Overcrowding: Poorly aligned front teeth can lead to overcrowding so that canines do not have enough room to fully function.
• Unusual growth: In rare instances, abnormal soft-tissue growth can inhibit proper canine teeth eruption, leading to eventual impaction.

Other possible causes of impacted canines include:

• Genetics
• Early removal or loss of baby teeth
• Improperly aligned teeth

What Is Pericoronitis?

Pericoronitis, more commonly known as a "wisdom tooth infection," develops whenever soft tissues around the crown of a partially erupted tooth overlap the tooth's chewing surface, leading to inflammation.

This situation allows room for bacteria to intrude and food debris to become trapped.

This can cause an accumulation of bacteria and the formation of an abscess under the gum flap.

Pericoronitis Symptoms

• Gum swelling, tenderness and redness
• Foul taste in the mouth
• Fever, loss of appetite
• Pain spreading to places like the throat, ear, or floor of the mouth.
