Our Story

The International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP) is the world’s largest multidisciplinary organization focused on pain research and treatment. IASP membership is open to all professionals involved in the research, diagnosis, prevention, or treatment of pain in such disciplines as anesthesiology, physical therapy, alternative medicine, pediatrics, neuroscience, and psychology.

IASP has more than 90 national chapters and 7,000 members who live in 133 countries. Members may belong to one or more of 21 Special Interest Groups such as neuropathic pain, cancer pain, pain in childhood, and pain in older adults.

To educate and inform its members, IASP funds a variety of grants and fellowships and produces scientific and clinical publications, including the PAIN®, PAIN Reports®, and PAIN: Clinical Updates. IASP also publishes a membership newsletter, PAIN: E-Monthly, as well as books on various aspects of pain through IASP Press. IASP hosts the Pain Research Forum where members of the international pain research community engage in an open exchange of information and ideas, as well as RELIEF, a site where the public can learn about new developments in pain research. Every other year, IASP hosts the world’s largest pain-related meeting of scientists and clinicians, the World Congress on Pain.

IASP was officially incorporated in 1974 and recognized as an NGO by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 1987.
