‘No one should be in prison for ma*****na,’ Biden declares

During a brief press availability last Saturday, July 16, President Biden shouted a few answers to reporters upon his return to the White House aboard Marine One.

A reporter asked him, among other questions, if he would be honoring his campaign pledge to release all ma*****na prisoners in federal facilities. (Biden has the power to commute or pardon prisoners in the federal prison system, but not in state prisons.)
His answer: “I don’t think anyone should be in prison for the use of ma*****na. We’re working on the Crime Bill now.”
Biden’s answer was
puzzling.

As President, Biden has the power to commute or pardon pretty much anyone for pretty much any crime or sentence within the federal justice system. He doesn’t need a crime bill. He doesn’t need a single vote in Congress to do it. All he needs is a pen to sign the decree.

New York Ma*****na Regulators Ask TikTok To Stop Banning Cannabis Education Advertising

New York ma*****na regulators are asking the social media app TikTok to end its ban on advertising that involves the word “cannabis” as they work to promote public education on the state’s move to legalize.

The state’s Office of Cannabis Management (OCM) sent a letter to TikTok executives on Monday, urging the company to revise its advertising policy for government entities so that they can freely talk about ma*****na in a public health and safety context.

OCM Executive Director Chris Alexander said that the office has launched a “Cannabis Conversations” campaign to inform New Yorkers about “who can purchase cannabis, where can you legally use cannabis, and how one can safely use cannabis, including protecting youth.”

“We are airing ads from this campaign on broadcast television, on billboards across New York, and on various social media platforms,” he wrote. However, when OCM attempted to extend that campaign to TikTok, regulators were “informed you do not take cannabis ads of any kind, including ones from government accounts promoting health and education.”

North Carolina Medical Ma*****na Bill Set For Senate Vote, As Poll Shows Overwhelming Public Support

A Republican-led bill to legalize medical ma*****na in North Carolina that’s already advanced through three Senate committees appears positioned to get a floor vote this week. And a new poll shows voters are overwhelmingly ready for the policy change.

The legislation from Sen. Bill Rabon (R) is set to be considered in the panel he chairs, the Senate Rules and Operations Committee, on Wednesday. The scheduled action comes about nine month after its most recent approval by another panel. And while that’s a lot of time for a bill to sit in legislative limbo, things now appear to be moving quickly.

According to Senate President Pro Tempore Phil Berger (R), the measure could reach the floor “later this week,” he told reporters. “I intend to vote for it.”

Patients would be allowed to access cannabis if they have a “debilitating medical condition” such as cancer, epilepsy, HIV/AIDS, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis and post-traumatic stress disorder.

NY weighs giving pizza joints, other eateries OK to sell cannabis-infused food

This could give new meaning to Big Apple pizza joints.
New York State officials are weighing whether to allow pizzerias and other eateries to sell fresh cannabis-infused grub and packaged pot edibles, The Post has learned.

Aaron Ghitelman, a spokesman for the state Office of Cannabis Management, confirmed there have been discussions about awarding such licenses to food preparers — raising the possibility of offerings such as pesto pot pizza or pepperoni with sweet w**d sauce.

However, “the regulations regarding infused food products have not been released yet,” Ghitelman stressed.

The Empire State passed a bill legalizing recreational ma*****na last year, and the first licenses to sell w**d will be issued in the fall, with sales in neighborhood stores to begin by the end of 2022.

State Sen. Liz Krueger (D-Manhattan), a key architect in writing New York’s cannabis law, said having eateries like pizzerias using cannabis was not a hot topic when she worked on the bill — but it’s not explicitly prohibited, either.
“Of course cannabis with edibles is not a new concept,” Krueger said.

150 pounds of ma*****na seized at Dulles airport in days prior to 4/20 'holiday'

The 100 packages seized just days before the holiday when the drug is most heavily used put a damper on the UK's celebrations.

DULLES, Va. — The unofficial holiday for revelers of the country's most talked about herb has now come and gone. But some folks across the pond looking to partake in the festivities were met with disappointment and sobriety on Wednesday, 4/20, the day many consider to be the 'high holy day' for ma*****na smokers.

While it may be legal to possess and obtain in an increasing number of states across the country, including many jurisdictions in the DMV, U.S. Customs and Border Control is reminding folks that it is still illegal to ship w**d overseas. Between April 16 and 17, CBP Agents at Washington Dulles airport seized 100 parcels being shipped to London addresses containing an astounding 150 pounds of the so-called devil's lettuce.

It appears Mary Jane's last dance was the customs office at IAD, as photos released by CBP show the haul was opened and counted during routine outbound mail inspections. Officers intercepted 80 packages of g***a coming from the Golden State of California, another 15 sinsemilla parcels from the sin city of Las Vegas, and five bundles of the sticky icky from Seattle.

Maryland Bill To Fund Psychedelics Research And Access For Veterans Goes To Governor’s Desk

Maryland lawmakers sent a bill to the governor on Friday that would create a state fund to provide “cost-free” access to psychedelics like psilocybin, M**A and ketamine for military veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and traumatic brain injury.

The bill from Sen. Sarah Elfreth (D) unanimously passed the Senate (46-0) last month and then also cleared the House of Delgates unanimously (135-0) on Friday, shortly following committee consideration and a second reading in the chamber.

The final vote came on the same day that Gov. Larry Hogan (D) allowed a separate piece of ma*****na legislation become law without his signature, creating initial rules for an adult-use legalization program if voters approve the reform at the ballot, which they will have the chance to do this November under a different measure that was enacted by the legislature.

DC Council Votes Against Closing Ma*****na ‘Gifting' Loophole

In a narrow vote, the D.C. Council failed to approve emergency legislation that would lift the requirement of seeing a doctor before being able to purchase medical ma*****na.
The setback for patients and dispensaries is good news for dozens of stores that are getting around the law by “gifting” ma*****na with other purchases.

Darel Dawson doesn’t sell ma*****na at his store, Peace in the Air, on 18th Street NW in Adams Morgan, but lots of customers walk out with pot.

His store is one dozens of businesses in the District calling themselves Initiative 71 compliant. The initiative made it legal to possess and gift ma*****na.

“If the legislation passed today, it would put hundreds if not thousands of people out of work,” Dawson said.

The House set to pass ma*****na legislation on Friday!

The House is set to pass legislation on Friday to legalize ma*****na nationwide, an effort that has unprecedented levels of support in both chambers of Congress.

The bill is likely to pass the lower chamber largely along party lines, with most Republicans expected to oppose it.

Proponents argue that legalizing ma*****na at the federal level will simply reflect most states’ existing policies that allow it in some form.

They also frame the effort as a way to end the disproportionate punishment of racial minorities and people in low-income communities for possessing and using w**d.

Congress Keeps D.C. Cannabis Sales Ban In Place But Continues Protections For Medical States

Washington, D.C. would continue to be blocked from legalizing recreational ma*****na sales under a bicameral omnibus spending bill that was introduced by congressional leaders early on Wednesday morning. But a separate provision protecting state and territory medical cannabis programs from federal interference remains intact in the legislation, which is expected to get get voters in both chambers this week.

The ongoing cannabis commerce blockade in D.C. is a disappointment for advocates who had hoped that congressional leaders in the Democratic-controlled Congress would remove the rider like the House did in its version last year and as the Senate also did in a draft version that was circulated by the Appropriations Committee.

Activists also wanted to see an expansion of the current state medical ma*****na protection language to cover all state cannabis programs from Justice Department intervention, but that didn’t pan out either.

President Joe Biden’s administration didn’t help when it released its budget proposal for the 2022 fiscal year, which maintained the so-called Harris rider blocking D.C. from using its local tax dollars from allowing cannabis commerce despite voter approval of an initiative to legalize possession and home cultivation eight years ago. The measure, named after its anti-legalization sponsor Rep. Andy Harris (R-MD), has been annually renewed since 2014.

Rep. Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) said she is “deeply disappointed” the legislation maintains the ma*****na rider as well as a separate one blocking the city from using local funds to pay for abortions. She placed the blame at the feet of “Republicans, whose votes are necessary to pass the bill.”
