Good people, During the course of the long winter, I kept repeating the mantra that “spring is coming.” It felt like a necessary emotional support technique during the dreary weather, the ongoing blockages in the asylum process, the Omicron and BA2 sub-variants of Covid, mounting political divis...

Here is an article by our Director, Dr. Hawthorne Smith, just published by the Center for Migration Studies. We hope you will take a few minutes to learn about the "other" family separation crisis affecting asylum seeking populations, and one step that can be taken to make a positive change (without huge budgetary and appropriations increases).

One of the most pernicious aspects of the changes to the asylum processes promulgated under the Trump administration is substituting the first-in, first-out (FIFO) policy for the last-in, first-out (LIFO) one.

Check out Dr. Hawk Smith's latest Director's Corner!

"Fellowship, steeped in authenticity, may be the best, and only, support we can provide. It may not be sufficient; but it is important and necessary. As we approach the end of this unfathomable year, I freely admit to my own fears and recognize my own fatigue and shortcomings. I accept that I cannot make promises about things we do not control. I own my tears - and no longer hide them from those I cherish. I have even admitted to my own musings about “giving up on helping people to not give up.” I have become more willing to share my emotions with fellow travelers who are currently lost in the desert - whether they be clients, colleagues, or family members.

I know we are close. I can feel it..."

What do you say to someone who is courageous enough to admit that they are ready to give up?

Our Story

The Bellevue Program for Survivors of Torture’s (PSOT) mission is to assist individuals and families subjected to torture and other human rights abuses to rebuild healthy, self-sufficient lives, and to contribute to global efforts to end torture.

PSOT was co-founded in 1995 by a small group of medical, mental health, and social service providers at Bellevue Hospital and NYU School of Medicine to address the complex needs of torture survivors in the New York City area. Since its inception, the Program has provided services to help rebuild the lives of nearly 5,000 men, women, and children from more than 100 countries regardless of their ability to pay. PSOT’s work is guided by the core belief that the individuals cared for are survivors in the true sense of the word, with innate resilience which enabled them to survive their trauma and to make it here to the U.S. The Program’s integrated approach is comprehensive, interdisciplinary, culturally sensitive, and client-centered.
