House Appropriations Chairman Tom Cole was unequivocal today on advance funding for Native health care:

“This committee will not be eliminating advance funding. It’s just not going to happen. It’s a bipartisan commitment.”

Advance funding ensures that the Indian Health Service and Native health providers — including Tribes and UIOs— can continue operating without disruption, even when federal budgets are delayed. Congressman Tom Cole ’s statement reinforces strong, bipartisan support for protecting that stability.

House Appropriations Chairman Mike Simpson made a clear statement today on the need to strengthen the stability of funding for Native health care. He emphasized that the Indian Health Service is the only federal health care program that does not have mandatory funding and that moving IHS to mandatory funding is necessary to provide long‑term stability and improve health outcomes.

His remarks reflect growing recognition that Native health care requires the same funding certainty other federal health programs rely on.
