CAREGIVERS and TBI Survivors take note: The July 17th meeting of the BIADC/NRH support group will be holding concurrent sessions - the topic "Maintaining a sense of self" will be addressed in separate groups for Caregiver and Survivors. We don't often have the luxury of splitting the group so those of you in the DC Metropolitan area we hope you will be able to join us.

It is amazing to me that it was 10 years ago that the BIADC held its first Brain Injury Support Group up on 3 East at the National Rehabilitation hospital! Some of those first participants still attend, 119 meetings later (only 2 snow day cancellations in all that time)! Thank you everyone who helped us start back then and who continue to attend and support this group of wonderful survivors, families and friends.

My name is Paul Barrett and I am a brain injury survivor living in England. Here in England most people who have had TBIs (and our families) find it hard or even impossible to get relevant effective help at the right time. Is it like that in the US as well?

I strongly want to put the word out, and compare how things are in our countries – putting forward survivors' and families' viewpoints.

I have been asked to talk about survivors' viewpoints at a world congress of brain injury rehab and I am hoping you can help to express survivors' perspectives, internationally. These questions are about cognitive rehab, being just one important area to focus on. Here is the link to the survey:

In addition, I would be very happy to receive any comments, questions, and ideas from your group's members and from you.

Yours truly,

Paul Barrett
(Severe TBI in 1991, doing very well now after a gap in time.)

FYI! BIADC will have a table at this coming weekend's NBC4 Health and Fitness Expo down at the DC Convention Center, accessible by Metro at the Mt. Vernon Station. The hours for the Expo are from 9-5 on both Saturday and Sunday.

The expo offers a lot of tips on healthy eating, exercise activities and many booths have items they give away. More information on the Expo can be found at this link and our booth will be number 2135 - just behind the Changing Minds pavilion!

Happy Monday! Thought I'd help Ms. Ali Wallace, a young TBI survivor, and Miss America contestant, with spreading her message. Here's a snippet: "When conversations of brain injuries come up, I want it to be general knowledge of how serious and complex the injury is. No two brains heal alike, and it's not like a bone where the standard recovery time is 4-6 weeks..."

Ali is a beautiful, smart, young woman who also happens to have an invisible injury that she struggles with every day -- a traumatic brain in…

Every single thing we do, whether physical or mental, takes a toll on our brain. The more we use it, the more it needs to rest. If we go out to a crowded restaurant with a lot of noise and stimulation, we may simply get overloaded and need to go home and rest. Even reading or watching tv causes our…
