When you visit us for a routine checkup, at certain intervals we also screen your mouth for signs of oral cancer which can be picked up by your dentist. Do you know what the top risk factors are for oral cancer?

👉 Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) is an STD with a risk of cancer found at the back of the tongue or in and around the tonsils. These can occur in nonsmokers and tends to happen in younger people.

👉 Men are more likely to be diagnosed with oral cancer than women

👉 Apart from HPV-oral cancer which occurs in younger patients, typically oral cancer appears in those over 55 years of age

👉 Heavy drinkers have a higher risk of oral cancer

👉 And of course, one of the leading causes is to***co use in any form.

Visit your dentist regularly for checkups and screenings but most importantly, adapt your lifestyle to help reduce your risks!

Should you rinse with water after brushing? Although most do it, it’s actually counter-productive! The fluoride and active ingredients in toothpaste need to sit on your teeth in order for it to be effective. So instead of rinsing with water, just spit out the excess toothpaste and use water to wipe the top of your mouth and you’re good to go!

We’ve shared some great healthy eating tips on food that are great for your teeth but what about your gums? Gum health is an important factor in the overall ecosystem of our oral health and often oral health issues can start in the gums, such as gingivitis.

Try adding these foods to your diet if you’re looking to help your gums keep up tip-top shape apart from keeping up with your regular twice-daily brushing and flossing.

Saliva plays an important role in the health of your mouth and a big part of how saliva can do this is by having a balanced PH level, but how do we keep it balanced? ⚖️

Start with a healthy diet, limiting sugar is always helpful as well as ensuring a balanced diet.

Reduce your alcohol and caffeine intake as best as you can.

Seeds and beans are great alkaline foods, so bring those into your diet.

A low PH level means a higher level of acidity in your mouth and this has a negative effect on your teeth and can cause erosion of the tooth enamel and more - so there is a big benefit to ensuring a balanced PH level in your mouth.

To get veneers are not to get veneers - that is the question. Although veneers (a thin layer of porcelain shaped to fit over your teeth) are generally a great option for those looking for a smile makeover, it isn’t the right solution for everyone.

If you meet the following criteria, veneers might not be the best solution for you and we can advise on an alternative:

💫 If you have very large fillings or severe tooth decay
💫 If you tend to grind or clench your teeth this can be a risk for damaging your veneers
💫 If you’re dealing with tooth sensitivity in the more extreme sense as veneers require removing a layer of your enamel
💫 If you’re unsure this is what you want to do, veneers are reconstructive and therefore a permanent change

We do have other ways to transform your smile to get the smile of your dreams, visit us to discuss your individual needs and we’ll help you get your dream smile! www.minovidental.com

An oral cancer screening is a routine of some dental visits. While those over 20 are to be screened about every 3 years, the 40+ camp will be screened annually.

The screening is not overly invasive but can save lives if detected early enough and this is why visiting the dentist for your checkups are of utmost importance!

Wondering what to expect during your screening? Take a read!

An oral cancer screening is a visual and physical exam of one's oral cavity and connected tissues, and takes place before the following symptoms even show.
