This Women's History Month, let's celebrate Mary Lou Breslin, an advocate and activist in disability rights law and policy for over 35 years and a founder of our partner Disability Rights Education and Defense Fund (DREDF). During her youth, Mary’s polio-related disability led to harsh treatment by society in the 1950-60s. Mary Lou's journey led her from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign to significant roles in community service and activism in Chicago. Her personal experiences turned into lifelong advocacy in 1975 at UC Berkeley, when she learned about the lack of legal protections for the disabled community.

As a co-founder of DREDF, Mary Lou has been instrumental in major legal advances, including advocating for the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Today, she is DREDF's senior policy advisor, focusing on healthcare research. Her contributions have been recognized with prestigious awards like the Eunice Kennedy Shriver Award and the American Bar Association's Paul G. Hearne Award. Mary Lou Breslin's deep commitment challenges us to dismantle societal barriers and advocate for equality.

AFB is excited that the DOJ has announced that a final rule requiring state and local government websites and apps to be accessible is coming soon! This rule covers public education, voting, transit, and so much more: https://ow.ly/kA5t50RbGjf.

A big concern is how often public school students face barriers using apps and websites in the classroom. These inaccessible websites are frustrating and impede learning, and sometimes students are simply excused from lessons that aren't accessible: https://ow.ly/5ikr50RbGjh.

75% of people in our Barriers to Digital Inclusion Survey reported barriers using websites to access public benefits information. Medicaid, SNAP, housing, & more are critical for people with disabilities, who face employment barriers or are older adults on fixed incomes: https://ow.ly/WExo50RbGjj. As we've said before, barriers have consequences! Inaccessible websites and apps cost time and money, are frustrating, result in less independence, privacy, and choice, and cause social exclusion. In short, blind people face discrimination from inaccessible websites and apps: https://ow.ly/21nQ50RbGjg

AFB helped lead the disability community's response to the proposed rule last fall along with American Council of the Blind, Consortium for Citizens with Disabilities CCD, National Disability Rights Network, and the National Federation of the Blind. 264 organizations joined our comments calling for all of the proposed exceptions to be removed. https://ow.ly/nVjs50RbGji

AFB is pleased that DOJ incorporated some of our recommendations in this final rule. Now, this rule will apply to websites and apps used by public schools and colleges, improving blind students' access to education. This rule isn't perfect, but it is a huge step forward. AFB will be reading this rule in depth and helping you understand how this rule impacts you. Stay tuned for more information about this forthcoming rule!
