This Women's History Month, let's celebrate Mary Lou Breslin, an advocate and activist in disability rights law and policy for over 35 years and a founder of our partner Disability Rights Education and Defense Fund (DREDF). During her youth, Mary’s polio-related disability led to harsh treatment by society in the 1950-60s. Mary Lou's journey led her from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign to significant roles in community service and activism in Chicago. Her personal experiences turned into lifelong advocacy in 1975 at UC Berkeley, when she learned about the lack of legal protections for the disabled community.
As a co-founder of DREDF, Mary Lou has been instrumental in major legal advances, including advocating for the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Today, she is DREDF's senior policy advisor, focusing on healthcare research. Her contributions have been recognized with prestigious awards like the Eunice Kennedy Shriver Award and the American Bar Association's Paul G. Hearne Award. Mary Lou Breslin's deep commitment challenges us to dismantle societal barriers and advocate for equality.
