Black History Month is an important time to celebrate, highlight, and reflect upon the deep contributions of Black and African American people in the U.S. We’d like to highlight the importance of black well-being.

There are a number of unique factors that affect the well-being of people within the black community. Our Health and Life Coaches are equipped to support the well-being needs of this community. They focus on the individual while recognizing the community aspects that may play a role in their overall well-being.

We interviewed our Founder & CEO Meigan Ward, who is a studying International Psychologist and Health and Life Coach. She shared her insights on the topic - based on her lived experiences and empirical research on mental health and the black community.

During the interview we asked, what advice do you have for people in the Black community who may be dealing with burnout due to paying the Black Tax or working harder for less, all in the spirit of Black Excellence?

Her advice ✨

“Be careful in the demand for Black Excellence. It can promote Black exceptionalism which can harm the well-being of Black people. That is because exceptionalism can create an unforgiving level of performance expectations in various aspects of one’s life.

Instead, demand your humanization - which is key to balancing excellence and well-being.”

In this ever evolving world, we ask our clients this question to put them in the empowerment seat whenever they encounter something new.

“How will you choose to do things differently than you have ever done in your entire life.”

Science tells us that the brain has a three part reaction when encountering something new/change.

🔹Brain Stem a.k.a. Critter Brain - fight, flight, freeze
🔹Limbic System - loads the emotions of fear etc.
🔹Cortex - builds a logical reason for fear etc.

Our Health and Life Coaches work with their clients to recognize their own unique physiological reactions to change and then empower them through the change in their lives.
