Bree Newsome (May 13, 1985 - present)

Brittany Ann Byuarm Newsome Bass is a filmmaker and activist best known for her act of civil disobedience on June 27, 2015 where she was arrested for removing a Confederate flag from the South Carolina state house grounds. The flag was officially taken down permanently on July 10, 2015.

Newsome was born in North Carolina and attended school in Columbia, Maryland. In 2003 she was named one of the “20 Coolest Girls in America” by YM magazine. While still in high school she created a short animated film which won her a scholarship and she studied film at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts.

She won the Outstanding Independent Short Film award in the Black Reel Awards of 2012 for her film Wake, and it also won Best Short Film at the BET Urban World Film Festival. Wake was also screened at film festivals like the 63rd annual Cannes Film Festival in France, and Newsome was the first African American undergraduate to be nominated for the Wasserman Award. Spike Lee won it as a graduate student.

Newsome was inspired to become an activist through her experience working as a Black woman in the horror and sci-fi film genres. She was arrested in July 2013 at a sit-in protesting North Carolina’s voter ID law, and June 2015 for taking down a Confederate battle flag on the grounds of the South Carolina State House. She climbed a 30-foot pole to remove the flag, but the flag was raised again within an hour of its removal. However, due to publicity in the news, crowdfunding to support her legal fees, interviews and talk shows, South Carolina’s House of Representatives voted on July 9, 2015 to officially remove the flag.
