Your brain can't tell the difference between a looming work deadline and being chased by a tiger. For both, it releases the stress hormone cortisol, which floods your bloodstream with sugar to prepare you for a fight. When you just sit at your desk stewing in that stress-induced sugar, your body has to pump out insulin to manage it. Chronic stress = chronic high insulin = a constant signal to store fat.
