Our OT Camp SMILE is in full force this summer! As we “travel” to different countries, we’re learning about how our bodies feel, and learning to regulate our emotions. We’re also having so much fun strengthening our muscles, practicing handwriting, and splish-splashing on Water Wednesdays!

It's been awhile but that's because our summer programs are in full swing! Our speech, language, and literacy students are engaged in fun, creative, and interactive activities that are developing new skills and strategies to help them with reading, writing, executive functioning, storytelling, and comprehension. As BHSM comes to an end, continue to foster connections between you and your child(ren) by doing a trivia challenge! Trivia is a fun and engaging way to bring families together.

Recommendations from our SLPs:

Tip: Take it slow - repeat the questions when needed. Create “think time” where no one can answer until 10 seconds after the question has been asked. Make a family rule that younger children get extra hints or clues.

BHSM continues and our TRG SLPs know that the best way to connect is to take some time and make memories!

Recommendations:
-Find a yummy recipe and make it together
-Share a comic or meme
-Attend a play/movie/sporting event
-Make a TikTok together

Tips:
-Have a conversation about your experience together
-Have your child draw a picture and write a caption about the activity.

Questions to ask:
-Can you remember all the events (and their order)?
-Was there anything surprising or unexpected that happened?
-Why was that event/comic funny (or not)?
-What was easy or challenging about the activity?

Summer is the time for fun! It’s also an opportunity to build skills and work to maintain progress that students have achieved during the academic year. The Reservoir Group at The Lab School of Washington’s intensive, hands-on summer programs in speech-language, literacy, and occupational therapy address reading, writing, language comprehension, fine and gross motor, and executive function skills.

Brimming with imagination, excitement, and research-informed practices we help students understand their needs, address their weaknesses, build confidence, and develop techniques for becoming independent learners. May is Better Hearing & Speech Month (BHSM) which raises awareness about communication disorders and the work speech-language pathologists do to help people. All this month, TRG SLPs will share some fun activities that children of all ages and adults can do together to better connect and communicate.

This week have fun and play a board game!

Tips from our SLPs: Talk about the game rules before playing. What rules could change to make the game more fun for all? For example, kids don’t have to use the game timer but adults do!

Speech, Language, and Literacy students practice expanding their thoughts and ideas while watching beloved shorts! Using “sentence kernels,” and wh- questions, students must expand on very vague descriptions of what characters do throughout a short to elaborate on events and characters.

In partnership with iNDIEFLIX, Learners Edge will be hosting a virtual screening of the documentary film Angst, tomorrow May 3rd at 6 pm CST for educators and administrators. Shining light on what it is like to live with anxiety, Angst hopes through inspirational tales of struggle, hope, and triumph to bring more awareness about anxiety.

April is National OT month, and to celebrate, our TRG OT is sharing this calendar that provides you with sensory strategies, divided into weekly sensory categories, to try each day at home or in your classroom/therapy sessions with your students.

Did you know we actually have 8 senses, not 5? Did you know we all process sensory information from our environment, and from within ourselves, differently? Bonus points for anyone who figures out the 8th sense (since it's not included in our calendar).

Our OT team will once again be offering Ready, Set, SMILE this summer! In this camp day program, 4-7 year-old children will work on improving their sensory processing, fine motor, gross motor, handwriting, and self regulation skills, all while having fun! The Winter Olympics inspired our OTs to create Olympic challenges that targeted various skills: midline crossing, bilateral coordination, upper body strengthening, motor planning, and eye-hand coordination (visual motor integration). Relating therapeutic activities to real-world sports and competitions can be motivating and rewarding! Can you guess what sports are represented here?

Calling all detectives! It is time to put your sleuthing skills to work. Through small-group instruction, students will hone their language comprehension and storytelling skills while solving mysteries and “crimes.” Mysteries will come alive through books, comic strips, and videos. A variety of methods and materials, including Story Grammar Marker® and Six Second Stories®, will be introduced.
