WhoCanYouTell

WhoCanYouTell Our Vision: To be a ‘HUB’ for research, advocacy, training, and education to combat health-related stigma through a social justice and health equity lens.

Stigma is the devaluation of a person because of an attribute such as an illness or disability, or a condition such as poverty or incarceration. Stigma shrouds affected individuals in fear, blame and shame, and becomes a major barrier to access and linkage with health care. Hence, stigma is a major cause of health inequities. Social determinants of health often affect health outcomes through stigma, magnifying disparities. Addressing health care disparities is a major goal of the United States Health and Human Services initiative, “Healthy People 2030” and is an integral part of Howard University College of Medicine’s mission.

Our Story

The Howard Stigma Project believes it's time to have an honest conversation about the attitude that spreads HIV/AIDS, Stigma. HIV/AIDS has come a long way in the last 30 years, with lots of medication to treat the virus, research for cures, thousands of education and condom distribution programs and a generational awareness. However, the disease keeps spreading globally. It is our belief that we need to include stigma into every conversation, prevention method and research about HIV/AIDS. It is time to have a different conversation about HIV/AIDS and other health-related stigma.
