National League for Nursing

National League for Nursing The National League for Nursing represents nurse faculty and leaders in nursing education.

Founded in 1893 as the nation’s first nursing association, the NLN promotes excellence in nursing education to build a strong and diverse nursing workforce to advance the health of our nation and the global community. The NLN offers faculty development programs, networking opportunities, testing and assessment, nursing research grants, and public policy initiatives to its 40,000 individual and 1,300 institutional members. Through Facebook, the National League for Nursing seeks to support and honor our core values of caring, integrity, diversity and inclusion, and excellence. Isabel Hampton Robb, Lavinia Dock, and Adelaide Nutting were among the early leaders of the American Society of Superintendents of Training Schools for Nurses — the organization we now call the National League for Nursing — but a number of other women also were present at the meeting that formed the new society and were elected its first officers in 1893. These women pioneered reform and transformation in nursing and nursing education, and their legacy lives on in the NLN's work today.

The Society's first two annual reports are part of the NLN Collection at The Barbara Bates Center for The Study of The History of Nursing at Penn. Check out the comments to read our origin story in this historic document!

New from the NLN: "Academic Progression in Nursing Education," a vision statement that charts a strategic course of bold action for nursing leaders in academia and clinical practice, faculty, students, and other stakeholders in today’s complex health care environment.

This is an update to the NLN's first Vision Statement in 2011 on this same topic and follows the landmark National Academies report "The Future of Nursing 2020-2030: Charting A Path to Achieve Health Equity." It presents a vision of seamless academic progression from PN/VN certification through the awarding of doctoral degrees, advancing competencies, and lifelong learning.
