LEAD, Argentum’s 16-week leadership program for professionals in the senior living industry, began yesterday! ⭐

Here’s a recap of the important takeaways that our nine Fall 2025 Cohort members gained from our week 1 kickoff session called "Captain or Engineer? Navigating Leadership vs. Management”:

1️⃣ Leadership vs. Management: Leadership is about inspiring and guiding a team toward a vision, while management ensures ex*****on through organization and structure. Both are essential!

2️⃣ Leadership Styles: We explored effective leadership styles (Transformational, Servant, Situational) and ineffective styles (Autocratic, Laissez-Faire, Transactional), and discussed how being able to recognize these can help shape your approach to leadership.

3️⃣ Building a Leadership Culture: Fostering strong team leadership is done by creating psychological safety, modeling desired behaviors, and recognizing efforts.

CALA hosted its first-ever Federal Day in Your District, bringing together 30 assisted living leaders and 13 members of Congress! 🎉

CALA’s Legislative Days are designed to advocate for high priority issues impacting seniors, to cultivate strong relationships with elected officials, and advocate for the future of senior living.

Through site visits, in-district meetings, and advocacy events, members are shaping the conversation around senior living and ensuring legislators understand the critical contributions of these communities within California and beyond.

The Work Opportunity Tax Credit (WOTC), a federal program to help disadvantaged individuals secure employment, has not been updated since its creation in 1996.

Congress last authorized the WOTC policy through the end of 2025. Updates to this policy are needed to ensure the quality of care across assisted living for both caregivers and residents.

To advocate for changes to the WOTC, we encourage you to write to your Congressional representatives to showcase the need for change as workforce issues continue to impact the senior living industry.

Argentum’s Workforce Projections for Senior Care, shows a current shortage of more than 400,000 workers in long-term care that is projected to grow to more than 20 million workers by 2040.

Workers are needed across a wide variety of sectors and skill levels, and that is why Argentum is advocating for legislation to be passed to advance caregiver workforce development.

Here are a few legislative solutions you can help us advocate for:

➡️ The Credit for Caring Act: would provide a tax credit for the cost of caregiving

➡️ The Improve and Enhance the Work Opportunity Tax Credit Act: would provide a tax credit to hire more senior caregivers

➡️ The Caring for Seniors Act: would provide grants for education and training for assisted living staff

➡️ The Care Across Generations Act: would provide grants for on-site childcare in senior care facilities for staff and enhance intergenerational interaction

Breaking news 🚨: CMS is preparing to repeal the 2024 nursing home staffing mandate, which required minimum staffing hours and 24/7 RN coverage despite objections from providers.

Courts have already struck down key parts of the rule, and Congress delayed its full implementation until 2034. A repeal would end the mandate entirely and shift the focus to new workforce solutions under development. The details about the repeal are not public as they are being reviewed by the White House Office of Management and Budget.

While this does not impact Argentum directly, we will continue to advocate for providers and residents and share the latest updates.

When Hurricane Helene struck in late September 2024, senior living communities faced unprecedented disruptions. Thanks to fast-acting preparedness plans, like stocking extra supplies, fueling generators, and setting up satellite phones, communities stood steady amid the chaos.
