The body often holds on to experiences long after the mind wants to move forward. You may notice tension in your shoulders, a tight jaw, a racing heart, a sense of being on edge, even when nothing is immediately wrong.

These responses are not failures. They are the nervous system doing its best to protect you. Healing does not require forcing the body to change. It grows through patience, awareness, and gentle reconnection.

Through breath, movement, and mindful attention, the body slowly learns something new:
Safety. Softness. Steadiness.

Sometimes we think we just need to push through fatigue or stress. But often the body is asking for something else.

The nervous system communicates through signals like:
– feeling constantly on edge
– difficulty concentrating or sleeping
– emotional overwhelm or numbness

These responses are not weaknesses; they are protective patterns that developed to help us cope.

When we respond with rest, breath, and gentle movement, the body begins to settle. With time and consistency, the nervous system can learn steadiness again.

Your body is not working against you; it is trying to support you.

Save this for the next time you need a reminder to slow down.

I created a free 10-minute grounding yoga practice designed to help you slow down and release tension that builds throughout the day. It is not about intensity or performance; it is about awareness and presence. If you have ten minutes, you have enough time to practice this gentle sequence, which focuses on:

– softening the neck and shoulders
– opening the chest and breath
– slow, mindful movement
– calming the nervous system

You can return to this practice anytime you need to reset and come back to yourself.

Emotional Wellness does not mean feeling calm or happy all the time. It means developing the capacity to be present with whatever arises: Joy 𑗅 Grief 𑗅 Uncertainty 𑗅 Relief 𑗅 Anger 𑗅 Hope.

Each emotion carries information. When we slow down enough to listen, those emotions can guide us toward deeper understanding and wiser choices. The goal is not perfection or constant positivity; the goal is awareness.

Reflection for today: What emotion has been asking for your attention lately?

MINDFULNESS MONDAY
Sometimes the most powerful reset is also the simplest.

Pause for a moment and notice your body.
Place both feet on the floor.
Let your shoulders soften.
Take a slow breath in.
Then a long exhale out.

Again: Take a slow breath in…. then a long exhale out……

We often move quickly from one responsibility to the next without noticing how we feel. These small pauses help the nervous system settle and remind the body that it is safe to slow down.

Emotional wellness often begins with moments like this.
– A breath.
– A pause.
– A quiet return to yourself.

Save this practice for the next time you need a moment like this.

GROUNDING & GROWTH
April is about settling into what has begun. My new website has launched; the seeds are planted, and now the focus is on nurturing growth, strengthening connection to the body, and cultivating steady support for emotional wellness.

Growth does not need to be rushed. Healing unfolds through awareness, practice, and community. Small daily practices create meaningful change.

Last weekend, I attended a community class where the newest cohort of yoga teacher trainees at Sun & Moon Yoga Studio taught for the first time. It felt like such an honor to be there, to witness and support them as they stepped into this new chapter as certified yoga teachers. The class was joyful and full of heart. I loved the round-robin style of teaching, and the thoughtfulness and care they brought to each offering. There was a beautiful thread of intentionality and new beginnings woven throughout.

Afterward, I found myself reflecting on my own path. I completed my 200-hour yoga teacher training 14 years ago, in April 2012, after nine months of deep, immersive study. Even that came after an earlier training I stepped away from before returning and committing to my 200-hour program at South Boston Yoga. My journey has not been linear, but it has always been meaningful.

I feel so much gratitude for all that yoga has brought into my life. The experiences, the relationships, the growth. So much has shifted, both on and off the mat, because of this practice.

I hope this newest cohort of teachers finds their path in a way that feels true to them, and stays open to all that is unfolding ahead.

Community does not appear overnight. It grows through shared moments, repeated conversations, and the willingness to show up as we are.

Building community takes time. It’s something you tend, not something you rush.

Keep showing up, even when it feels quiet. Consistency is what people come to trust.

Try new things. Some will land, some won’t, and all of it teaches you what your people need.

Let it be relational, not transactional. People can feel the difference.

Create simple, repeatable touchpoints. The small, steady rhythms are what bring people back.

Invite participation, not just observation. Give people a way to be part of the space, not just witness it.

Allow it to grow slowly. Depth matters more than numbers.

Stay connected to your why. That is what will guide you when things feel uncertain.

Community is built in the quiet, in-between moments in how you listen, how you respond, how you care.

What has helped you build meaningful community?

My New Website is Here!

There is something tender about beginning again. Not because it is dramatic. Not because it is loud. But because it is honest.

Today, I am so honored to share my new business and website for Joanna Barrett Yoga & Wellness LLC.

This is not a reinvention of who I am. It is a clearer reflection of what has always been here. Emotional Wellness Yoga. Writing. Teaching. Speaking. Listening. Community.
A steady place to land.

Over the years, my work has deepened. My voice has softened. My understanding of the nervous system, trauma, and healing has matured. This space now reflects that integration. It reflects the belief that emotional wellness begins in the body. That healing is steady. You do not need to push harder to change your life. This work is for people who want to live with greater steadiness, clarity, and connection to themselves.

In this space, you will find what is currently available and what is coming soon:
• Emotional Wellness Yoga
• Workshops and Retreats
• Insight Timer meditations
• Public classes in Virginia (and online)
• Writing and reflections
• 6-week and 3-month programs for peace and emotional liberation
• Yoga for Therapists course
• A free 10-minute yoga practice

If you are someone who longs to feel more grounded in your own life, more connected to your body, more steady in your decisions, I hope you explore.

You are allowed to begin again.
And so am I.

My Journey....

Joanna Barrett, LMHC, MA, E-RYT, is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor and an Experienced-Registered Yoga Teacher, offering counseling and yoga to clients with emotional and physical challenges, as well as those looking for stress relief and relaxation. Joanna’s experience in holistic wellness and mind-body modalities for healing has led her towards guiding individuals to reach their full potential for optimal well-being. Joanna’s journey to yoga began after struggling for many years with depression, chronic fatigue, migraines, insomnia, and extreme stress. Her body, mind, spirit, and soul needed profound calming, centering, and relaxation. After her first yoga class, Joanna’s mind was clear and open, her body’s tension had subsided, and she felt that there was healing that could be done on her mat. Three years later, Joanna found herself gravitating towards yoga teacher training to advance her practice and find passion and purpose in her life. Moved deeply by the psychological effects of yoga, Joanna decided to pursue a career in yoga and mental health counseling. She earned her master’s degree in clinical mental health counseling from Lesley University in Cambridge, MA. Joanna’s career includes the Cambridge Insight Meditation Center, Harvard University’s School of Public Health, South Boston Yoga, Healing Tree Yoga & Wellness Center, Om Births, Breathe & Play Everyday, The Yoga Room, the Pathways Institute, and community mental health agencies in the Boston area. Joanna has experienced over 1,000 hours of yoga workshops and trainings in vinyasa, yin, restorative, prenatal, therapeutic, and trauma-informed yoga. Joanna completed her 200-hour teacher training at South Boston Yoga with David Vendetti and Todd Skoglund. She continued her studies and completed her Relax and Renew® restorative yoga teacher training with Judith Hanson Lasater, yin yoga teacher training with Joshua Summers, and prenatal yoga teacher training with Rebecca Conant of Om Births. Additionally, she completed teacher training modules in the areas of “the psychology of yoga” and “restorative yoga therapeutics” with Bo Forbes, as well as “Trauma Informed Mindy Body (TIMBo)” foundations training with Sue Jones and YogaHOPE. Joanna completed a yoga therapy mentorship program with Kate Graham of Soulful Yoga Therapy at South Boston Yoga, and later went on to assist the program. Continuing her studies, Joanna regularly attends national workshops and classes to learn new tools to bring to her students. She has taken workshops and training programs with Seane Corn, Elena Brower, Kathryn Budig, Shiva Rea, and Dr. Timothy McCall, among others. Joanna is a member of the International Association of Yoga Therapists, American Psychological Association, National Counseling Association, Massachusetts Mental Health Counselors Association, and Yoga Alliance. Joanna is also a public speaker for national women's organizations, and a published writer for Elephant Journal, Identity Magazine, the South Shore Wellness Collective, the Pathways Institute, Cream no Sugar Magazine, and Yoga Girl.
