We recently had a great visit from senior federal officials at HHS Administration for Strategic Preparedness and Response!

They stopped by our Biocontainment Unit to see how our team trains year-round to stay ready for high‑risk infectious diseases and other emergencies. As one of only 13 Regional Emerging Special Pathogen Treatment Centers in the country, it’s a big responsibility we take to heart.

Learn more about the visit in the comments.

We were honored to host senior federal officials from HHS Administration for Strategic Preparedness and Response for a tour of our Biocontainment Unit.

We're grateful they took time out of their busy schedules to see the work our team is doing. As one of 13 RESPTCs, we stand ready to strengthen national readiness for high-consequence infectious diseases.

Most hospitals in the U.S. are unable to safely handle patients with high-consequence infectious diseases (HCID). The National Special Pathogen System helps fill this gap in healthcare system readiness by preparing the healthcare system, protecting the healthcare workforce, and responding to special pathogen events. The Regional Emerging Special Pathogen Centers (RESPTCs) are regional hubs within that system that provide highly specialized care to high-consequence infectious disease (HCID) patients.

Medstar Washington Hospital Center is one of thirteen Regional Emerging Special Pathogen Centers (RESPTCs) in the U.S. designed to deliver highly specialized care during special pathogen responses. MedStar Washington Hospital Center also trains healthcare providers so we are ready to protect Americans.

With support from ASPR, Medstar built a 15-bed biocontainment unit designed for respiratory isolation and the treatment of patients with high-consequence infectious diseases. This facility enables to Medstar to provide HCID patients with the care they need while protecting healthcare workers.

HHS Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary, Administration for Strategic Preparedness and Response, John Knox toured the biocontainment unit. He also met with experts from Medstar’s team to discuss the critical role RESPTCs play in national preparedness for and response to HCID incidents.

Our annual Black History Month celebration added to our reputation for setting the standard for excellence, education, and entertainment for this beloved event.

This year's theme of "Celebrating 100 years of Black History Month" featured our keynote speaker Bradley Chambers, MedStar Health Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, Baltimore Region, sharing his family's immigration story from Jamaica to New York. In addition, the Morgan State University Musical Theatre delighted us with a special Motown musical r***e, and Soul in Motion shared the richness, beauty, and experiences of African-American culture through dance and drumming. Our own Gift Paulos also sang her signature version of 'Lift Every Voice and Sing' and led associates in 'This Little Light of Mine'.
