Kids in Action CN Kids in Action is a FREE adaptive sports and recreation activities program for children and young adults with disabilities.

Kids in Action began as an avenue for children with disabilities to participate in structured social and physical activities in the community. As our patients can move through different health care settings, often beginning in an acute care facility and then transitioning to rehab and outpatient therapy, it was identified by many of the families that there was a lack of options for their children

to participate in social and physical activities. Parents were concerned that their children would lose newly acquired skills that were recently achieved through their therapy services. As a result, Kids in Action was designed for outpatients and former patients at Children's National Rehabilitation & Specialized Care (formerly The HSC Pediatric Center), along with other children in the DC metro community. The program offers year-round adaptive team sports, social events and health classes for children with disabilities, ages 4 and up in the DC area (including Northern Virginia and Maryland). The program is entirely free to all participants, and siblings are encouraged to participate. All abilities are welcomed, as necessary adaptations are made so everyone can participate, and events are supervised by recreation therapists.

The fun never stops with Kids in Action! What an amazing weekend it’s been.

After a great day sailing yesterday, today was full of jumping, bouncing, flipping, and lots of laughter. We made new friends and had an absolute blast and we have the pics to prove it!!

Ahoy, mates!! ⚓️

Six of our very lucky families had the incredible opportunity to sail the Chesapeake Bay today with Chesapeake Region Accessible Boating! For a few magical hours, wheelchairs stayed on the dock as kids transferred onto a sailboat and set off on an unforgettable adventure. ⛵️

We spotted other boats, kayakers, and birds, felt the rhythm of the waves, and let the wind carry us across the water. 🌊⛵️

It was a truly special day filled with joy and memories that will last a lifetime. 💙

We’re still smiling after an amazing day at Great and Small! It was such a special experience—riding and grooming the horses, and for many of our kids, their very first time on horseback.

We also had the chance to brush the horses and give them treats, which made the day even more memorable.

No horsing around—we had an incredible time!

Happy Volunteer Appreciation Week! 🎉

Kids in Action wouldn’t be possible without our incredible volunteers. Their kindness, generosity, and enthusiasm make every moment special for our Kids in Action All-Stars—and we are so grateful for each and every one of them.

This past Saturday, we celebrated with an amazing Only Make Believe show and a special lunch where our All-Stars stepped into the roles of chefs and servers! They took orders, served meals, and shared plenty of smiles along the way. It was a joy to watch, and we hope our volunteers felt just how appreciated they truly are.

Thank you to our amazing volunteers and Only Make Believe for everything you do for Kids in Action! 💙

🏈 Touchdown, Kids in Action! 🏈

Kids in Action ALL‑STARs had a blast at the Commanders Field Experience last week! From the moment we stepped onto the field, it was game on! We ran & rolled drills like real pros, played fun football games, and laughed the whole time- no flags on the play, just smiles everywhere!

We even got a behind‑the‑scenes VIP pass to the brand‑new locker room, where the Commanders gear up before kickoff. It felt like we were part of the team! 🏆

The crowd went wild when Major Tuddy showed up, bringing BIG mascot energy, high‑fives, and lots of laughs. The Commanders Cheerleaders brought the hype too, cheering us on and reminding us that football is all about teamwork, joy, and having fun.

It was a winning day, full of touchdowns, team spirit, and memories we’ll never forget. Now that’s how you score a great experience! 🏈🎉

Our Egg Hunt event was full of smiles, and so much excitement! Families came out to see the Bunny, hunt for eggs, take photos, and enjoy candy, toys, and lots of happy moments.

Thank you to everyone who joined us- we loved spending time with you!

A big thank you to Only Make Believe for their amazing show Imagination Unlocked! Their performance was full of fun stories, teamwork, and creativity. It was so fun to watch kids use their imaginations and jump into the adventure. You all are incredible- we appreciate you so much! We can’t wait to see you again later this month!

This beautiful, warm weather has us dreaming about the spring and summer ahead!

☀️ Since we couldn’t make it to the beach yesterday, we brought the beach to us with some colorful sand art crafts. 🏖️

Our All-Stars had a blast creating their masterpieces while practicing attention to detail, assertiveness, and fine motor skills. We love finding fun, hands-on ways to build important skills while making great memories together! Thank you !

🎳Kids in Action rolled into the bowling alley last Sunday for an afternoon full of fun!

There were strikes, spares, and splits- no gutter balls in sight! The lanes were filled with giggles, high-fives, and lots of excited “YAYs” as everyone stepped up to take their turn.🤩

But more than the bowling, the best part was seeing friendships grow and new ones begin- that’s what Kids in Action is all about.✨
