Since the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, menopause has become a critical political issue affecting millions of American women.
Seventy-five million women in the U.S. are currently in some stage of perimenopause, menopause, or post-menopause. Despite this, only a fraction of the NIH budget is allocated to women’s health research, with even less dedicated to menopause studies. This lack of funding and attention has resulted in inadequate care and limited information for millions of women.
💡 Why this is a feminist issue:
The neglect of menopause research and care highlights a systemic disregard for women’s health, impacting their quality of life and career paths. However, recent initiatives like President Biden’s executive order on women’s health research and bipartisan bills in Congress are empowering menopausal voters to advocate for better healthcare, underscoring that bodily autonomy encompasses informed choices and competent treatment beyond pregnancy and abortion.
As the upcoming elections approach, the stakes are high for those experiencing menopause, with equitable federal funding, down-ballot races influencing access to care, and the need for medical professionals’ education on menopause all crucial issues to consider.
