St. Elizabeths Hospital/Government Hospital for the Insane

St. Elizabeths Hospital/Government Hospital for the Insane The land was purchased by Congress for the new government hospital for the insane in 1852. The hospital actually opened its doors on January 15, 1855.

The main building was of Kirkbride plan and had a patient capacity of 250 patients.
