The MCH Navigator project was launched by the Maternal and Child Health Bureau (MCHB) in early 2010 to address the professional development needs of the field. As budget reductions are shrinking funding for training-related time, cost, and travel, online resources are an effective alternative for continuing education. The MCH Navigator is a centralized portal for pursuing continuous learning in ma

ternal and child health and is designed to help emerging and established MCH professionals map professional growth pathways, locating:

• Where they are now – whether a student or an established professional,
• Where they want to be – identifying the skills and competencies necessary for organizational and personal goals, and
• The best route to get there – linking to targeted and effective learning resources. The MCH Navigator seeks to enhance access to currently available public health MCH learning resources by “matching” learner needs with learning paths. This initiative is intended to complement, and not be a substitute for, formal institutionally-based undergraduate or graduate education programs in maternal and child health.

In Workshop #4 of the MCH CELL for Community-Partnered Teaching Series, we introduce how a five-step framework (PBT STEPS*) was used to guide the development of an MPH course on
the design, implementation, and funding of an environmental-level intervention and communications campaign for community trauma in Winthrop, Massachusetts. The first part of the workshop describes the evolution of a partnership between the Winthrop Department of Public Health and Clinical Services (WDPH) and Boston University School of Public Health, and walks through each phase of PBT STEPS as applied to the community trauma example including:

S -securing partnerships with WPHD and configuring the semester to result in success
T - technology and training to ensure active engagement through different technologies
E - engagement and implementation of the course including tailoring deliverables
P - presenting course deliverables (papers and communication materials) and a grant for funding
S -sizing up results including qualitative data on the utility, benefits, and challenges of the course and quantitative data through the learning management system and surveys from an alumni perspective.
