C h a p t e r 1 ~ p a r t 2 : Grief

Someone might experience grief because it is the natural response to loss-and loss comes in many forms.

While it’s most commonly associated with the death of a loved one, grief can also arise from:

• The end of a relationship (breakups, divorce, or losing a friendship)
Losing a job or career identity
• Major life transitions (moving, retirement, becoming a parent)
• Health challenges (chronic illness, disability, or injury)
Loss of a dream or future expectation
Cultural or collective grief (loss of community, environmental grief, global events)

Your mind is always learning—so what are you teaching it? 🧠

✨ As RBTs, we shape behavior every day, but are we shaping our own internal algorithm with the same intention? Our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors create patterns that impact not just our work but our mental health, too.

If we don’t take control, stress, burnout, and unhelpful reinforcement patterns will do it for us. Rewrite the code, reinforce what serves you, and build patterns that support both your well-being and your impact. šŸ’™

Winter is nature’s way of saying, ā€œSlow down.ā€ Yet somehow, we’re told that January 1 is the perfect time for big, bold New Year’s resolutions.

But think about it—bears aren’t emerging from hibernation to run marathons or re-organize their dens in January. Trees aren’t blooming. The earth isn’t bustling. It’s resting. You should be too.

Instead of pushing yourself to ā€œdo more,ā€ what if your resolution this year was to align with winter’s rhythm?

Here’s how:
✨ Set Goals to Rest: Plan earlier bedtimes, schedule slower mornings, or create a cozy evening routine that feels restorative.
šŸµ Nourish Your Body: Commit to eating foods that warm and comfort you. Hydrate. Give your body what it craves.
ā¤ļø Set Boundaries: Say no to overcommitment and yes to quiet time. Protect your energy like animals protect their dens.
ā„ļø Focus on Renewal: Think small, gentle shifts that prepare you for spring: decluttering one drawer, journaling once a week, or spending 5 minutes meditating.

This season, redefine ā€œgrowthā€ as healing, resting, and restoring. Let’s hibernate before we bloom. šŸŒ§ļø Save this as your permission slip to rest, and share it with someone who needs a gentler start to the year.

Gratitude Isn’t Always Easy—And That’s Okay

Gratitude doesn’t mean ignoring pain or pretending everything is fine. It’s about holding space for both the hard and the good, finding ways to anchor yourself even during life’s storms.

Here’s how behavioral science can help:

1ļøāƒ£ Acknowledge All Feelings: Gratitude coexists with discomfort. Use acceptance strategies to label your emotions (e.g., ā€œI feel overwhelmedā€) and pair them with gratitude for something small, like your effort to keep going.

2ļøāƒ£ Reframe Challenges: Practice cognitive reframing by finding one positive aspect in a tough situation, like what it’s teaching you or the strength you’re developing. It’s not about toxic positivity—it’s about balance.

3ļøāƒ£ Start Small: Use the behavioral principle of shaping by focusing on simple, tangible gratitudes—a warm blanket, a smile, or the fact you made it through today. Small steps lead to lasting change.

Gratitude isn’t about escaping reality—it’s about embracing it with grace.

What’s one small thing you can be grateful for today, even in the midst of challenges?

Happy disability pride month! šŸ¦‹

Imagine having these sudden twitches or jerks that you can’t stop, or blurting out words or phrases you don’t mean to say. It can be embarrassing and frustrating, especially when people don’t understand and might stare or make comments.

Not only that, but it can affect your daily life in so many ways. Simple things like sitting still in class or at work can be a challenge, and it can make social situations more complicated too. Some days are better than others, but the unpredictability of tics can really mess with your confidence and self-esteem.

Living with Tourette’s requires a lot of patience, understanding, and support from friends, family, and sometimes medical professionals. It’s about finding ways to manage the tics and not letting them define you.

I could live in the mentality of how debilitating it is and how I wish I didn’t have to deal with it but I choose to see the beauty in all things, to love my body and brain, to help myself and others find effective ways in managing the symptoms.

Why Both Internal and External Awareness Matter 🧠

Let’s paint a picturešŸŽØ

You’re in a bustling meeting room, ideas flying like sparks, when suddenly, a critique lands on your work. Internally, you feel a surge of defensiveness, a knot of insecurity. But wait—internal mindfulness comes to your aid. You pause, breathe deeply, and embrace your emotions with compassion, without judgment.

Simultaneously, external mindfulness whispers in your ear. You shift your focus from self-protection to empathy, considering the speaker’s perspective and intentions. Suddenly, the critique transforms into constructive feedback. With newfound clarity, you respond—not react—with grace and understanding, nurturing collaboration instead of conflict.

Understanding the difference between internal and external mindfulness allows individuals to discern between their own experiences and those of others. Internal mindfulness helps in self-reflection, managing emotions, and making decisions aligned with personal values. External mindfulness enables empathy, effective communication, and building strong relationships by understanding the perspectives and feelings of others. Recognizing these distinctions empowers individuals to navigate various social dynamics and interpersonal situations more effectively.

Use the tools above to tap into and reflect your internal and external mindset 🧠

This means that a lot of the clients Behavior Analysts are working with struggle with Tics and do not have the appropriate support built into their programs.

Tics can present similar to stimming from an outside eye, but they are very different and should be supported differently.

Why are RBTs and BCBAs not taught about tourettes, ADHD, Epilepsy, OCD before working with clients when 74% of children diagnosed with Autism have comorbidities.

Follow along to learn about tourettes with me, from my personal experience and studies. šŸ§ šŸ«€

šŸŽ¤ Nurturing the Throat Chakra šŸŽ¤

The throat chakra, the center of communication and self-expression, holds the power to shape our voice and truth. When neglected, it can manifest in various pain points that impact our lives profoundly. From excessive shyness to physical ailments like neck pain, thyroid issues, and GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease), these signals remind us of the importance of tending to our inner voices.

šŸ—£ļø Excessive Shyness: Cultivate self-expression. Practice speaking your truth, assertiveness, and setting boundaries to overcome shyness and embrace your authentic voice.

šŸ¦‹ Neck Pain: Release tension. Incorporate neck stretches, yoga poses like Fish Pose, and massage techniques to alleviate physical discomfort and promote relaxation in the throat area.

šŸ¦‹ Thyroid Issues: Support thyroid health. Consume foods rich in iodine and selenium, practice throat chakra affirmations, and explore energy healing modalities like Reiki to balance and harmonize the thyroid gland.

🌱 GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease): Honor your truth. Cultivate mindfulness around food choices, practice mindful eating, and explore stress-reducing techniques like meditation and breathwork to manage GERD symptoms and promote digestive health.

Nurturing the throat chakra involves both mind and body practices that promote authentic expression and balance. By embracing communication, self-expression, and mindful living, we can unlock the power of our voice and live a life filled with clarity, authenticity, and well-being. 🌟
