Parkinson's Disease Alliance of WI

Parkinson's Disease Alliance of WI A world where advanced research & treatment eliminate disorders like Parkinson's Disease In 1996, Nebraska created the country's first PD registry.

Parkinson’s disease has a significant impact on individuals, families, and society. People living with Parkinson's often require caregivers as the disease progresses and hinders their ability to perform daily activities such as dressing, eating, and walking. As the fastest growing and 2nd most common neurodegenerative disease (behind Alzheimer's), the impact of Parkinson's disease is expected to g

row significantly. A Parkinson's disease registry is crucial for several reasons: it helps track the prevalence and progression of the disease, informs public health planning, facilitates research, and aids in clinical trial recruitment. By gathering comprehensive data on Parkinson's disease cases, registries can provide valuable insights into the disease's impact on different populations and potentially identify risk factors, ultimately leading to better treatment and care strategies. When Wisconsin passes it's own legislation, we will join 15 other states in collecting health information about people living with Parkinson's in a way that supports patients' privacy and dignity and advances science and healthcare.

Wisconsin has 14,000+ people living with Parkinson's disease — and no statewide registry to understand who they are, where they are, or what they need. We're changing that. 💙

This October, we're hosting Wisconsin's first-ever Parkinson's Disease Registry Planning Summit. But this work doesn't run on goodwill alone.

We're beaming with pride! 🌟
Our founder and director, Stephanie Johnson, shone bright on today's WPR episode of Wisconsin Today alongside Dr. Rachel Dolhun, Michael J Fox Foundation's Principal Medical Advisor.

Together, they sparked a vital conversation about the challenges and triumphs of being a care partner to a loved one living with Parkinson's disease.

Stephanie also shared her courageous journey toward passing the Rick Johnson Parkinson's Disease Registry bill, inspiring us all to take action! 💪

The Parkinson's Disease Alliance of WI was in Washington, DC this past March for the Parkinson's Policy Forum and met with Wisconsin members of Congress, reminding them to continue prioritizing the National Parkinson's Project asks:

*Producing a clear estimate of the investments needed to prevent, diagnose, treat and ultimately cure Parkinson’s.
*Improving quality of life for people living with Parkinson’s and their families — including both younger-onset and older populations.
*Firm, accountable timelines to make up for lost time and sustain momentum.

Parkinson's Awareness Month originated to honor the birth of Dr. James Parkinson, who first described the disease in 1817. The tulip became a symbol of Parkinson's in 1980 when J.W.S. Van der Wereld, a Dutch horticulturist with Parkinson's, created a red and white tulip and named it in honor of Dr. Parkinson.
