I created a collection of incense blends dedicated to the Elements, designed to enhance my meditation practice through a sensory experience.
For the Water element incense blend, I used plants whose aromatic profile are reminiscent of a stream of water, and which support regulating of emotions. Plants related to the Water Element will often have moistening properties, an action on the water mechanisms in the body (think kidneys, urinary system, lymphatic system), or regulating our emotions. The Water element relates to our emotions and feelings, and represents our emotional body.
The herbs included on the Water element incense blend are:
Jasmine is believed to help promote feelings of love, confidence, compassion, acceptance, and emotional balance. Jasmine helps relax tension and nervous anxiety.
Lemongrass is soothing, cleansing, helpful for spiritual baths, and adds a fresh note to perfumes. Interesting thing to note, related to the Water element, is that the essential oil possesses antipyretic properties, meaning it helps reduce fever (Fire in the body) – here we see the Water element used to balance Fire.
Kelp is nourishing, cleansing and helps decongesting the system. Kelp also has high mineral content which gives it a salty aroma reminiscent of the ocean.
Bergamot is used to soothe anger, frustration and depression, by decreasing the action on the sympathetic nervous system. Its cool and refreshing aroma is relaxant, calming and imparts a feeling of optimism and spontaneity and helps us to relax and let go of accumulated tensions and unexpressed anger.
Vetiver is uplifting and helps stabilize the nervous system, to reduce stress and depression. Its balancing effect also helps ease excessive energy due to nervous tension, while helping to focus the mind and to overcome nervous fatigue.
Altogether, these herbs form a lovely Water element blend, you can use in your meditation practice to connect with the Elements on a deeper and subconscious level.
