Progress in speech therapy doesn’t follow a straight line 〰️
Growth is complex and rarely linear 🌱
I wrote a short post about what progress can actually look like in therapy, especially when it feels uneven or hard to measure.

I published an essay responding to a recent New York Times “The Daily” episode on autism and resource scarcity.
Scarcity in disability services is real, but it’s not caused by inclusion or destigmatization. It’s the result of chronic underfunding and exclusionary systems.
This piece argues for re-centering the conversation on systems, not people.

I meet so many families during evaluations who are unsure why their child isn’t meeting typical language milestones — but who are clearly using language in other ways.

One of the most rewarding parts of my work is introducing families to gestalt language processing and helping them recognize the rich, complex communication their child is already using. From there, therapy focuses on building and expanding language in ways that fit how their child learns best.

At Third Space Speech & Language Therapy, I provide neurodiversity-affirming speech therapy for children and adults across Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Virginia, supporting each person’s authentic path to communication.

If you’re curious what language development can look like for gestalt language learners, read the full post here:

October is AAC Awareness Month 💬
AAC (Augmentative & Alternative Communication) comes in many different forms, including text-based apps like this one. Different people need different tools, and there’s no one-size-fits-all solution ✨
That’s why an evaluation by a speech-language pathologist is so important — to match the right tool to each person’s unique communication needs 💛🧡🩵

💬 It’s AAC Awareness Month!
AAC (Augmentative & Alternative Communication) helps children and adults find reliable ways to communicate — from picture boards to tablet apps and dedicated devices.
At Third Space Speech & Language Therapy, we provide AAC assessments (evaluations) in Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Virginia to help families and clinics find the right fit.
✨ Communication is a human right. AAC makes it possible.

What is AAC?
AAC stands for Augmentative & Alternative Communication.
It’s how people can communicate when speech is hard — from gestures and picture boards to high-tech devices.
Communication is a human right. For some people, AAC makes that possible. 🗣️
✨ In my latest blog post, I share what families should know about AAC, from common myths to how speech therapy helps with evaluations and device selection. Link in bio → Resources.
💬 I provide AAC assessments and therapy in the DC/MD/VA area. Tap the link in my bio to get in touch 👋

Why do we play in speech therapy?
Because play isn’t just fun — it literally helps the brain grow!
🧠 When we’re having fun, the brain releases dopamine, a chemical that strengthens the connections (synapses) between neurons. Stronger connections = faster, easier learning.
📚 Research shows that enjoyable, game-like learning boosts attention, motivation, and memory, all of which make new skills stick.
So when your child is laughing, building, or pretending in therapy, they’re not ‘just playing’. They’re wiring their brain for communication success. 🌟

Recovery isn’t about workbooks. It’s about living your life again. ✨
When I meet a client after a stroke or brain injury, I ask:👉
“What would make you feel like yourself again?”
Common answers:
➡️ Communicate clearly 🗣️
➡️ Get around independently 🚘
➡️ Connect with family & friends 📞
➡️ Return to work 💪🏻
💡 For almost every goal, there’s an app that can help.
In therapy, we might practice:
📌 Sending a text or voice message
📌 Making a video call
📌 Navigating with GPS
📌 Setting reminders
🧠 And we always adapt tools — accessibility settings, vision, reading/writing, attention — so tech actually works for *you.*
✅ Functional therapy is about rebuilding life, not just skills. If you or a loved one are navigating recovery, this kind of therapy can help.

Meet Jasper, my fluffy co-therapist 🐾
Motivation for communication is born from genuine interest and the desire to share. When kids see Jasper pop into a virtual session, their excitement creates powerful, authentic language opportunities. One of my favorite moments was when a non-speaking kiddo taught *me* the sign for “cat” 🐈‍⬛
(He only joins in during virtual sessions from my home — but he takes his job very seriously!)

⏱ Every minute counts when it comes to stroke. Knowing the warning signs can save a life — yours or someone else’s.
Here are 5 signs to look for:
🧠 Sudden weakness or numbness (especially on one side)
🗣 Trouble speaking or understanding
👀 Vision changes
🚶 Loss of balance or coordination
⚡ Sudden severe headache
📲 Call 911 immediately if you notice these signs.
I break down what each of these can look like (and what to do next) in my latest blog. 👉 Read the full post — tap the link in my bio, then go to Resources in the top menu.
