ACPM proudly celebrates those who move prevention forward! πŸŽ‰

ACPM was honored to be welcomed by HRSA Principal Deputy Administrator and Chief Medical Officer Dr. Ann Sheehy, who discussed how the Administration is advancing preventive medicine and encouraging prevention throughout the health workforce.

The State of the College panel, led by President Dr. Ryung Suh, incoming President Dr. Jill Waalen, President-Elect Dr. Jim Tacci and Treasurer Dr. Michael Crupain shared the accomplishments of ACPM and noted the College's vision and direction. ACPM launched the Prevention First campaign β€” a member-led effort to transform the U.S. healthcare system into one that prioritizes and is organized around prevention.

Dr. Tonette Krousel-Wood was recognized with the Board of Regents Scientific Excellence Award for her research contributions to the field, and Dr. Kenneth Kizer received the President's Award for his service to uplift prevention. Dr. Shereef Elnahal received the Katharine Boucot Sturgis Award and delivered an inspiring lecture on his experience as a leader in academic public health.

Congratulations to these outstanding physicians who continue to elevate our specialty and follow along for more! πŸ‘

We’ve worked in a system that was designed to treat disease, not prevent it.

On May 14, we're changing that. ACPM Advisory launches as a platform connecting preventive medicine physicians with federal health partners and health systems ready to make Prevention First systems a reality.

This is how we build a system designed to keep people healthy, not just treat them when they're sick.

The countdown is on! Just one week until Preventive Medicine 2026 kicks off in Baltimore, MD!

Looking back at these moments from last year's conference in Seattle reminds us of the power of bringing preventive medicine and public health leaders together. This year, we're excited to gather in Baltimore β€” a city that positions our specialty at the intersection of clinical care, public health agencies and academic institutions.

Join us May 14-17 for high-quality CME programming, networking and celebration of the best in our specialty!

"Access to Preventive Medicine is the difference between a system that serves the public and one that fails it." - Rep. Debbie Dingell

On April 22, Congressman Vern Buchanan and Congresswoman Debbie Dingell hosted a bipartisan discussion in Washington, DC, on how physicians in preventive settings are stepping up to meet today's growing burden of chronic disease. The conversation highlighted how Preventive Medicine physicians are being trained with modern, population-focused skills and how they're already making an impact by delivering care directly in communities. The panel included ACPM Treasurer Dr. Michael Crupain, ACPM Regent-at-Large Dr. Joseph Iser, ACLM Director of Medical Education Dr. Brenda Rea, and CEO of the Florida Association of Community Health Centers Jonathan Chapman.

As conversations evolve around incorporating more prevention in medical education, ACPM continues to highlight that Preventive Medicine is currently the only ABMS-recognized specialty where physicians learn to treat patients and keep them healthy at both an individual and population level. However, our health system doesn't fund Preventive Medicine training to meet the needs of the nation. There are only 3,000 board-certified Public Health & General Preventive Medicine physicians across the nation β€” less than half a percent of the U.S. physician workforce.

Urgent action is needed to address the shortage of physicians who can help battle upstream causes of disease and assist in delivering care to vulnerable communities, especially those in rural and under-resourced settings.

From childhood through older adulthood, the food we eat matters. But so do the systems that determine what's available, affordable and accessible.

Join ACPM for this essential plenary session on nutrition and chronic disease prevention. This session will explore the complex relationship between diet, health outcomes and the environments that shape our ability to make healthy choices β€” highlighting both clinical strategies and the system changes needed to support all Americans.

Preventing chronic disease starts with nutrition β€” but creating healthier communities requires addressing food insecurity, barriers to access and the environments that shape our choices.
