DC Primary Care Association - DCPCA Taking Action For A Healthier Community

Our key partners in this effort include community-based safety net primary care providers who are committed to our mission of creating an effective, integrated health system that guarantees access to primary care for all residents. The strategic priorities of DCPCA center around the sustainability of the District’s community health centers, advocacy and public policy efforts to drive innovation, change and transformation of the District’s health care system and data management initiatives to create a technology infrastructure to support population health objectives with data to inform decision-making. All of these efforts work together with the goal of improving population health and ensuring that all residents of the District have a fair shot at a full and healthy life. DCPCA has been at the forefront in strengthening the District’s primary care system by enhancing and leveraging resources to expand and improve primary health care services for DC residents. Our work is achieved through a broad portfolio of projects, including building community health centers to expand access to quality health care, developing policies to support access to care and sustainability of community health centers, building quality in the system for improved health outcomes, building a community workforce of people to help navigate this better system of care, and developing health information technology to link it all together, facilitating the development and sustainability of an effective, integrated health care system in the District that guarantees access to primary care and eliminates inequity in health outcomes.

Today, we reflect with gratitude, and look ahead with purpose. As part of National Health Center Week, we asked staff from DCPCA and the DC Connected Care Network to describe their vision for Community Health Centers over the next decade in just a few words.

The responses were powerful:
🔹 Equitable
🔹 Accessible
🔹 Comprehensive
🔹 Empowered
🔹 Innovative
…and many more.

These words form a collective vision rooted in justice, compassion, and transformation. They reflect our commitment to enabling our member health centers to be financially sustainable, resilient, culturally competent, and technically advanced.

Take a look at the word cloud to see how our teams envision the future, and think about how YOU can join us in shaping it.

During National Health Center Week, we’re proud to spotlight the incredible staff who make community health centers a place of quality care, connection, and transformation.

Meet Christian Minter, Perinatal Services Manager at Community of Hope DC, whose leadership is shaping the future of maternal and infant health in DC.

Christian has spent nearly three years building systems of care that center compassion, consistency, and community. From leading CenteringPregnancy and Parent Cafés to coordinating perinatal navigation and care, she ensures every family feels supported during life’s most critical moments.

“I am passionate about creating a community where families in DC can thrive,” Christian says. “I love that I get to do this work at a community health center.”

Her achievements include:
Expanding access to group prenatal care through evening/weekend options
Launching cross-departmental working groups to improve care models
Supporting the rollout of a reimagined Perinatal Navigator role
Establishing a consistent schedule of perinatal groups like prenatal yoga and infant massage

Christian’s work is a testament to what’s possible when care is rooted in equity, empathy, and excellence. Join us in celebrating Christian and all the staff who power our partner health centers!

In honor of National Health Center Week, we’re proud to highlight the incredible work of Veronica Hernandez from Mary's Center.

During a time when thousands of low-income DC residents face uncertainty around healthcare coverage, Veronica has been on the frontline working tirelessly to ensure that every eligible person is enrolled in a health plan. Her dedication is unmatched.

Veronica’s journey began 10 years ago with Mary’s Center’s Home Visiting Program, where she saw firsthand the challenges families face in accessing community resources. That experience ignited her passion to do more. She joined the Entitlement team two years later and, in 2024, became the program’s manager.

Her work is especially vital for those who don’t speak English or are illiterate in their native language. Veronica helps residents navigate complex systems and verifies eligibility for programs like Medicaid, Medicare, DC Healthcare Alliance, Immigrant Children Program, SNAP, and TANF, guiding them through every step. In 2024 alone, Veronica and her mighty team of three along with the DC Health Link in-person assisters and Maryland health connect team enrolled over 28,000 DC and Maryland residents into these health programs.

But her impact doesn’t stop there. Veronica educates elected officials, testifies at DC Council, and engages with community leaders to advocate for those she serves. Her story is one of resilience and purpose. She immigrated from El Salvador in 2003, overcame financial barriers, and worked in landscaping and house cleaning before earning her degree in psychology from Trinity College.

In 2024, she earned her master’s in social work from Catholic University, and she’s now pursuing her social work license.

Veronica says Mary’s Center has been her inspiration...and we say Veronica is an inspiration to us all! 💙

At Community Health Centers, patients don’t just receive care...they help lead it. Every CHC board is made up of at least 51% patients, ensuring that decisions about services, priorities, and programs are shaped by the people who rely on them most.

On Patient Appreciation Day, we celebrate the voices, experiences, and leadership of patients like Warren Ingram, a board member at our partner Community of Hope.

For years, Warren passed by Community of Hope’s Conway Health and Resource Center without knowing what it was — until one day, he walked in. That decision saved his life.

From early-stage prostate cancer to diabetes and high blood pressure, Warren’s provider, Sandra Dickson, helped uncover and treat conditions he didn’t know he had. But more than that, she built a relationship rooted in trust and respect.

Now, Warren uses his experience to encourage others to get screened, seek care, and advocate for their health — because survival, he says, comes with responsibility.

Mary's Center - How it started vs. how it's going! ⏪

Mary's Center is an exemplary model of community-driven care. Founded in 1988 by nurse Maria Gomez in collaboration with DC Mayor Marion Barry, Mary's Center began as a safe haven for Latina women fleeing violence and poverty, many arriving pregnant and alone, with no access to care.

From a basement on Columbia Road came a significant initiative. More than 35 years later, Mary's Center has expanded to five locations, providing comprehensive care services to over 65,000 individuals annually.

Their story is a testament to how health centers evolve to meet their communities' needs — not just treating illness, but helping families thrive.
