The hope is for Learn2Derm to provide building blocks that help bridge the gaps in dermatology. The first Learn2Derm event focused on skin cancer.

Vision: Delivering dermatologic education & care to communities with limited access in order to improve the quality of life and reduce long-term complications from common skin conditions through early detection, attention, and management. The vision of Learn2Derm is to ensure that all individuals regardless of socioeconomic status, race, or location have an equal opportunity for dermatologic education so they can recognize when to seek treatment, how to best care for their skin, and how to integrate practices for the primary prevention of skin cancer into their daily lives. There are many skin diseases that negatively impact quality of life and there are just as many misconceptions regarding treatments and etiologies for such conditions. It is our duty as healthcare providers to combat such misconceptions, especially to communities that already are socioeconomically and geographically limited to quality healthcare access. The Learn2Derm: Skin Cancer Prevention Fair used interactive and engaging teaching styles adequate for all ages to educate regarding skin protective strategies and skin cancer presentation and risk factors. Dermatologists from GW SMHS also provided free skin cancer screenings to the Ward 8 community of Washington DC. It occurred on July 10th at Martha’s Outfitters in Ward 8, which is an underserved population that is approximately 92% black. This event aims to close the well-established disparity in skin cancer presentation and mortality amongst individuals with skin of color through educational interventions focused on skin cancer presentation, prevention and early detection.

Medical students from GW had a wonderful time last month teaching high school students from the ATC program at Trinity Washington about all things skin! Both the medical student teachers and high school learners loved engaging with the L2D Youth Curriculum lessons about skin health, eczemas, caring for dry skin, and skin myths! ✏️🌟🌞

We know it’s tempting to take a hot shower🚿 or crank up the heat🥵 when it’s cold ❄️ — but if you have dry skin or eczema, be careful! Excessive heat can strip your skin of moisture💧, weaken your barrier🛡️, and trigger flare-ups 🔥. Stay warm this winter, but not too warm! 😎

Learn2Derm teamed up with Miriam’s Kitchen to serve not just meals, but also skin care education! 💜✨While guests enjoyed a hearty and healthy dinner, we provided education on eczema, psoriasis, and skin cancer, along with skincare essentials like sunscreen and lotions. Our mission is to increase skin health literacy in underserved communities, and with Miriam’s Kitchen commitment to ending chronic homelessness, we’re working together to support our local community!

October is Eczema Awareness month💡💫Eczema is also known as Atopic Dermatitis, and it is the most common form of skin inflammation. The National Eczema Association (NEA) is a great resource for those with eczema to learn more about this condition. There are many triggers for eczema, including perfume, harsh soaps, and even fragrances laundry detergent. If you can think of any other general tips for managing eczema, comment here 💜
