Our skill of the week this week is Wise Mind. In DBT there are three primary ways to refer to states of mind. They are Emotional Mind, Rational Mind, and Wise Mind. Emotional Mind occurs when your thoughts are being controlled by your emotions. Logical thinking and planning are difficult, facts may be distorted or made larger or more important.
*
Rational Mind is when you can think logically or be rational and reasonable about what is occurring. Analytical and empirical thinking are predominant.
*
Wise Mind is the point of overlap between emotion and reasonable mind. Wise mind is part reason and part emotion and what makes you know you’re in this mind is often a sense of intuition. It can sometimes be described as that ‘aha’ moment.
*
DBT founder Marsha Linehan describes Wise Mind as “that part of each person that can know and experience truth. It is where the person knows something to be true or valid. It is almost always quiet. It has a certain peace. It is where the person knows something in a centered way.”

Have you ever wondered what brainspotting is? We talk a lot about trauma, but how do we fix that trauma so we can start to heal?

Brainspotting is a form of therapy that uses eye positions to access the brain’s emotional resources and help a person heal from trauma. By locating where the person's gaze “pauses” or “gets stuck,” the therapist can cue that particular area of the brain, helping the person to identify and process their traumatic memories and associated emotions.

This type of therapy can be especially helpful in situations where the trauma was experienced at a young age, or when the person is unable to verbalize their experience.

The therapist may use bilateral sound, music, or directed eye movements to create a movement in the emotional material held in the body and brain.

Through the process of creating a secure and safe space to explore the areas of trauma with the therapist, the person can better understand the connection between their mind and body.

By creating a depth of awareness the person can begin to shift their perspective and gain more insight into their trauma. Additionally, increased emotional regulation and an increased sense of safety can be established through the process of this therapy.

Derek is certified in brainspotting and has seen so much progress in his clients that have used brainspotting to help heal their trauma.

Make sure you put “Mans Search For Meaning” at the number 1 spot, it’s the best one I’ve ever read and I share it with all my clients!

Let’s talk about anger! We’ve all been there, done that, but do we really understand it?

Did you know that anger is a secondary emotion? What that means is that we use anger to protect ourselves or cover up other vulnerable feelings. Before we feel angry, we almost always feel something else, which is the primary emotion.

For example, we might feel afraid, attacked, offended, forced, trapped or pressured. If these feelings are intense enough, we think of the emotion as anger. But really, there’s something underneath that anger, just like our iceberg.

Sometimes it’s difficult for us or our kiddos to articulate what’s beneath that anger and that’s where the feelings wheel comes into play.

Start with some deep breaths, pull out the feelings wheel, look at the situation and find which emotion you’re really feeling and work on articulating that the best you can. If you’re working with your kiddo, have them choose a feeling and draw a picture based on that feeling.

Teaching them how to work through their anger to find those vulnerable emotions will help in tough situations and keep them emotionally healthy.

What are some things you do to help yourself or your kiddo so your anger iceberg doesn’t sink you like the titanic?

Hi everyone! I wanted to introduce myself and thank you for following along with me on my new adventure! My name is Derek Barney and I’m the owner, operator and sole employee of A Way Back Counseling. I’m a clinical mental health counselor and I specialize in working with teens, kids and addiction. And while I specialize in those, that doesn’t stop me from helping anyone that needs it.

For the past 15 years I’ve been working in the mental health field. Right now, my day job is as a therapist at Sunrise Residential Treatment Center and the 8 years before that my wife and I worked as Family Teachers for Alpine Academy in northern Utah. I love helping families and I’m thankful for a job that allows me to do that.

A long time ago, I had a close therapist friend who saved my life, took me under his wing, and allowed me to do trade for therapy because I couldn’t afford it. I decided that when I was able to open my own practice, I would pay it forward. So that’s where you come in. I know that therapy’s expensive and many times you need it desperately, but can’t afford to pay for it. So for circumstances like that, I have a pay what you can program. You pay what you can and later on down the line, pay it forward to someone else that needs it. We’re all here together and I’m here to help you get back to where you want to be.
